Pain hyperextending DIP joint

Hi all,

I've done a lot of googling to try find anyone with the same symptoms that I have, but without success. I'm hoping someone on here could shed some light.

I've only been climbing a couple of months. A week ago, I started to feel mild pain when I hyperextend the DIP joint on several of my fingers.

The pain is on the inside side (side you see when palm is facing you) of the DIP joint, and/or just below the DIP joint. Its hard to pinpoint precisely. Putting pressure on the joint, or bending the finger in any direction other than hyperextending it doesn't cause any pain.

It's been a week now of rest (i.e. no climbing) and the pain doesn't seem to be reducing. I probably would just keep climbing, since the pain is mild, except I started reading all about hand injuries and how long they take to heal, so I think it is best to be cautious figure out what the problem is before I consider climbing again.

Thank you for any help!

Hi again,

The pain has reduced slightly, but is still there. It has been nearly 2 weeks now.

I've been reading a lot about how you are supposed to keep climbing as soon as you safely can after an injury, so that you can strength the weakened tendons/ligaments, so I went back again last night. I tried to avoid any crimpy routes and did stuff that wasn't too hard for my level. My DIP joints feels about the same as before, perhaps a tiny bit more sore in a couple of them.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
