Wondering if anyone knows anything or has information on bouldering or route climbing on the rocks around the Carter Notch Hut in the White Mountains. There are pretty tall faces to both the north and south of the notch and a number of boulders strewn around.

Bump. I’m looking at pictures of the Rampart and the boulders look big and beautiful up there.

I stayed at the hut about a week ago and read an entry in the hut journal about a 5.6?? that was climbed by a group earlier this year. I’m not sure if the route went above the boulder field and up Carter Dome or if it went up some of the rock on the wildcats on the other side of the notch. Not quite sure the quality of the route or surrounding rock, but it might be worth scouting out.

Here is a picture I took of Carter Dome from the bunkhouse closest to the main hut.

Looks like some big boulders up there. Did you get a feel for the rock quality?

There’s a lot of sensitive plant life in the ramparts, and there’s a sign stating specifically to stay on rock only. So maybe keep that in mind if you’re thinking about climbing stuff.

I didn’t get a good look at the rock quality unfortunately. Greg brings up a good point about protecting plant life in the area. Also, protecting some of the boulders may be difficult with uneven landings and little chasms all around the boulder field.

Thanks! Good point. Def looking for info like this. I’ll be in Jackson enjoying the surroundings, so I’ll go check it out.

Any updates on the climbability up there?

I was also thinking about the climbing potential of the cliffs adjacent to the hut. There’s some impressive looking features. This photo is taken from the trail looking west across the pond:

I was a caretaker at Carter Notch for a couple seasons... definitely some decent bouldering up there.   Probably some routes too.  I wrote down some of the problems I did somewhere up there...

Anyhow, it's a cool zone, maybe not as good as you'd think at first glance but it's definitely there if you're feeling adventurous!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
