Climbing Mount Hood in Late July

Hi everyone,

I was wondering how conditions typically are on Mount Hood during the last week of July?

I have a few other summits planned and am hoping to sneak Mount Hood in before the conditions get too bad.

Thanks!

For most people, the acceptable climb window for Hood ends in June. Too much loose rock & ice once the snow is gone. There are people who have climbed it every month of the year, quite recently even. But I wouldn't recommend it.

I’ve climbed it in July and will never do so again. Don’t do it. The mountain is a pile of loose kitty litter and dangerous boulders once the snow and ice melts.

Best ski descent I have had on Hood was in mid-July. It's so variable from day to day....

Thought on late June (this week)

Conditions vary in the Pacific Northwest. Be mindful of rockfall and fumerols during the summer as the snow melts and leaves exposed glaciers on Hood.

If there's snow all the way to the summit ridge, it'll be fine.  If not, it'll be as described above.  It's hard saying, but I'd guess it's unlikely that it'll stay snowy until late July.  That being said, it's really not that bad to climb the old chute if the snow stops 10-20' short of the ridge crest.  It is however quite bad to be climbing underneath someone else in those conditions.

This is the best beta.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
