Brooklyn: climbing and schools?

Hello,

Hoping to gain some wisdom from this group. Looks like we are moving back to Brooklyn after some time away. Now we have two young children in tow- the older will be starting kindergarten in a year. From listening to my friends, the school situation in Brooklyn sounds a bit of a puzzle to be solved.

We love outdoor climbing and are sadly aware of how hard it is to get out of Brooklyn for adventures due to traffic etc. However, this is where the jobs are...so for now we are limited to Brooklyn (or possibly queens with long commute).

That being said- does anyone have any suggestions for a BK neighborhood to live in that 1) has good access to a climbing gym and 2) has good public schools? We can basically live anyplace in BK except for the very expensive areas, which are out of our price range. I hate to ask about gym climbing but for now with a one year old, this may be our best option for regular climbing.

I hear Gowanus will have a new gym ...

We are primarily trad and sport climbers so bkb is not ideal.

Thank you very much!

The MetroRock in Bushwick might be a good option for you. No idea how school system works.

There is also a Vital gym under construction in Williamsburg but it looks to be at least 12-18 months away. Have yet to see a large gym open in NY on schedule.

Check out GP-81 for some sweet bouldering and training.  They are currently adding a ton of new stuff.  I don't know about the schooling though, sorry.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
