Indoor shoes for extra wide / extra high volume feet?
|
Been having trouble finding a good climbing shoe. For reference Im a 4E width and also a very high volume foot with a decent sized arch. Outdoors I mainly use approach shoes (La Sportiva TX4) which were the widest approach shoes I could find. They barely - just barely work with the laces all the way out and theres still a bit more room at the end compared to what Id like. |

Five ten rogue fits me a half size below street, and I can wear them all day. They're unlined leather and balloon out as far as your foot will stretch them. |

What is your street shoe size? What climbing shoes have you tried? - this might give better feedback on fit than just "4E"/high volume |

For "normal" D width shoes I usually have to size that up to an 11 to get the width / volume to fit comfortably but then of course the length is totally wonky |

Wide, but low volume foot here. I prefer 4Es and can get away with 2Es with wide toeboxes and a very limited "D" width shoes with extremely wide toeboxes. Also a former lead hiking footwear sales guy. The Mythos are my goto shoe because I can stretch them out to my foot and they're comfortable for all day trad. They're tight at first so watch TV, play video games, etc with them on for a week or so to slowly break them in. I'm on pairs #2 and #3 with resoles on both. Volume shouldn't be an issue though you may be able to see the top of your foot around the tongue if you're really high volume. |

Respectfully, the folks recommending the Mythos are crazy. That is a low volume, narrow shoe. Yes, the laces go to the toe, and yes it is unlined leather. But you will have a lot of painful days in those things before they feel decent. Just my two cents, but I would go with something like the Butora Altura Wide, or Butora Mantra Wide. Unfortunately, the Altura is lined, but will stretch. I think the Mantra is lined too. I would probably go onto Amazon and get some cheap shoe stretchers to stretch out the width of the toe box as well. That will help no matter which shoe you choose. |

The reason I didn't suggest the Butora's, even though they are very wide, is the woven lining plus the very stiff lasting board them very hard to stretch and having a 9 4E foot falls WAY outside of being able to stretch a shoe like the Altura's you mentioned. |

And if you are stretching Mythos that much I think you'll end up trying to edge on the rand rather than the sole. But it sounds like you guys have actually used the Mythos this way. In vivo experience trumps my theorizing. |
