Let's just go with snaplink.

Snaplink is an old term. I think it was used up through the 60's with some holdouts through early 90's.

BTW east Europeans, at least until recently, spelled Carabiner as Karabiner.

Eric - the use of that term is wayyyyyy off limits on the internet too....

According to this pertinent article, the history of the racial slur is unclear, but as far back as the end of WWII, so mid 1940's. As far as I can find, "Carabiner" goes back to the 1930's. I cannot judge when it was popularly truncated to "'biner." I was assuming very quickly, but I could be wrong. Regardless, "'biner" goes way back and has just as much history as the racial slur.

Not that I believe everything on Wikipedia, but the bean aspects seems to go back further  : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaner

As the actual usage origin of both is unclear I guess one could say we are at a Mexican Standoff :-)).

(And if we were UK centric it would be a Dutch Standoff).

I think you should really boycott all businesses that use the word "bean" in their menus. Plus, Monster coffee drinks should be boycotted as they sell a drink flavor known as MEAN BEAN, which could be misconstrued to mean that hispanics are in general disagreeable.

I guess if you don't bother to look up definitions or worry about the actual history of a word you can say any word that is similar to a offensive word is off limits... I don't use the word myself but it's pretty dumb to be offended by it.

Totally agree.

Totally agree too - I am guilty of not looking up the definition...but that doesn't really matter does it? By that I mean:

- I wasn't offended at all, but...

- Other cultures might....as it's just too close to what does offend them....

Thanks for the English lesson but I'll stick with the word "stingy"!!!

I think context is important here. The only time I ever use the slang "biner" is when I am climbing, or talking about climbing with other climbers. I don't use the word "biner" with non-climbers because they likely would not know what I meant. I will continue using "biner" in proper context.

we could simply use english instead of italian, and say "snap-link" instead of "carabiner" (or, if Italian is your mother tongue, go ahead & say "carabiner".  same for "peg" = "piton" or "rope down" = "abseil"  don't it seem kinda pretentious to insist on using the French word for this item, Italian for that one, German for that third one over there... duh!?!  and why do we use a medieval sailing term to identify a rope brake? belay that noise!

Do we also need to stop calling large easy to grasp holds as "jugs?"

Absolutely. And really, we just need to stop using words in general, because words can be hurtful. This reckless use of words has just gone too far.

Yes, and we should stop referring to our gear as a "rack." That's offensive to deer.
