I'm sure only civil and insightful conversation will come out of this

Already been discussed on MP. Not a new topic. Consensus if I recall is that saying biner is okay.

Like most sensitive topics on MP, its mostly virtue signaling and white knights calling for the end of x or y. Haven't ever heard a Latino ask for a stop to the word 'biner'.

I think the difference is in using the word "BINER" as opposed to "BEANER"...see the difference???

Indeed.

Yes language matters. The context of its use matters more.

Love your name güey!

Ughh. Glad my climbing club isn't having this debate. I think we can safely assume that most Latinos are smart enough to get context and will not be offended by "biner".

Is beaner still an insult that people actually say these days? I don't think I have ever heard anyone use "beaner" except in the movies. Perhaps because my friends aren't a-holes.

Asking for a friend.

Latinx is all the rage right now. Apparently Latino and Latina are not inclusive enough anymore.

Not quite....

Of course in a lot of those posts we don't know if it's intentional, ignorance, or just spelling-challenged.

I don't have a problem using the word "'biner," even being Mexican American.
I do have problem that there's a "White Hole" in the White House

Should we stop using the word 'cracker' to describe the crispy snack?

The whole crux of this argument is, does word context matter? If so, then it doesn't matter. IMHO no words should ever be off limits.

Colin, your 'Nygger' argument is embarrassing and not the same.

Since we already use word like arête, avalanche, col, couloir, dièdre, glacier, piton, rappel, etc., why not mousqueton?

Absolutely not.  Why are you assuming that they are buyner-y?  Let them decide.

Also, how is it not the same? I'm very curious about this one

"Biner" is a shortened form of "carabiner " Nygger is not a shortened form of anything. There's the difference.

Biner is just easier to say. Like "chute" for "parachute." Because it's easier, I shall continue to use it.
