The first gen Patagonia Tropic Comfort Hoody is and has always been my favorite.  I like the the t-shirt type synthetic blend over the stretchy synthetic blend.  I can't find a back-up first gen Tropic Comfort anywhere.  Does anyone have a medium they'd like to part with, or have any recommendations for a similar hoody?

I'm a big fan of the Free Fly bamboo hoody.  The bamboo fabric is a little fragile, but it's incredibly light and doesn't hold an odor like synthetic fabrics do.  The company is based in Charleston, so they're made for the humidity down here.

Bass fishermen have had this figured out for ages. We don’t need no stinking hoodies.

Except I don't fish, and I don't want to wear a wide brim hat with a helmet when I'm climbing.

I had good experience with mine last year on Mt. Baker then again on Rainier. It's fragile though. Wearing a pack and harness for 10 days left a few marks.

I am surprised the alpenglow doesn't have some sort of antimicrobial treatment? That has been a complete game changer in synthetic layers for me (at least those that are next to skin). I can run in my Patagonia Tropic Comfort 5+ times in high humidity and it doesn't really smell. The Polygiene treatment is the real deal, I won't buy a synthetic base layer without it or an equivalent.

I have a Tropic Comfort Hoody I use for sun protection, but have been considering one of these to beat up while climbing since it is <$25: https://www.amazon.com/Vapor-Apparel-Protection-Performance-Sleeve/dp/B06WWF1NXS/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=sun+hoody&qid=1553923425&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1

If you or a friend has a membership to Sam’s club, you can order a hooded long sleeve sun shirt https://www.samsclub.com/sams/habit-mens-hooded-performance-layer-long-sleeve-shirt/prod22411926.ip?xid=hpg_carousel_rich-relevance.rr0_1 for $13.98.

It does have some sort of treatment, but it/mine doesn't hold a candle to Patagonia in terms of number of uses between wash. I get 1-2 uses out of the BD, but I think it's better suited for less humid climates or lower intensity activity.

So I took a Black Diamond Alpenglow on another Cascades trip. It did as well as my OR Echo sunhoody. The large is big on me where the large in the OR has a nice athletic cut which I like. The OR is lighter as well. The Alpenglow is a bit thicker.

I took the Black Diamond back and have since gone back to the OR. I will add another OR Echo to the kit going forward.

looks like you got a lot of tips, one more

the free fly shirts have worked well for me but they are for fly fishing and tear easy...

I like the Rab Pulse Hoody for hot weather and those cheap Baleaf ones on an Amazon for cooler temps.

Been climbing trees in Florida for 5 years. I wear 25-50% polyester blend long-sleeved shirts at work. They're better than the 100% poly versions, like fishing and running shirts. They're way cheaper than sun hoodies, and work great in 95+ temps with very high humidity (so it feels like 110 outside).

You can feel the breeze as if you are not wearing a shirt, and protects from sunburn very well.

Also, I suggest gardeners hats, the brim going 360 degrees is a godsend when you want the sun off of your shoulders and neck (getting the sun off of your shoulders, not just your neck, is massively helpful for that sun draining feeling). Obviously this is not for while you are currently climbing.

But honestly, the best solution, for me, has been to let yourself acclimate to the heat. Every florida summer is really hard at first, but you get used to it. And your skin wont sunburn if you allow yourself to develop a tan by avoiding using sunscreen as much as healthily possible. I am Norwegian, so I am very white by nature, I sunburn easily too, and this is what works for me.

I sunburn very easily and I also need to cover tattoos, so I’m looking for a good sun hoody that works well for humid NC summer days. Currently considering the BD alpenglow (though I hear it isn’t great in humid conditions) or the OR echo (only UPF 15). Does anyone have experience with these? Or are there any other options out there that would serve me better?

Dumb question...  When I lived on the East Coast (specifically climbing at the NRG) rain would come out of nowhere.

Why not use a rain jacket as a sun hoody?  Some have water wicking technologies that might keep you dry in humid conditions.

Breathabiity for any rain jacket in hot/humid conditions leaves a lot to be desired - unless you also need to meet weigh in for a UFC fight later that month. Also how much does a high performance rain jacket cost when compared to a sun hoodie?

I wore sun hoodies a for whole sticky summer in Pisgah and still thought it was better than a T-shirt.

I like putting a bandana under the helmet. A lot lighter than a hoody so you don't sweat yourself to death. It also doubles as black fly pro.

I climb in either the Patagonia hoody, or the TrueWerk hoody multiple days per week in all weather. Both options have been very durable.

The TrueWerk runs a little cooler, but the bugs bite through it easier. If you like hood under the helmet then this one is a bit better than the Patagonia. TrueWerk is also a lot cheaper, like almost 2:1 cheaper.

The Patagonia hood fits over a helmet better, and is more bug proof. The small chest pocket can be convenient as well.
