What are peoples thoughts on the new R1 Hoody and how it compares to the older versions (Please only provide feedback if you have actually purchased/used it)?

I only have the newest one. I like it. Warm, functional, looks good. Still stinks to high hell despite the polygiene...

I own an older model (thinner cuffs and waist; black pocket, Patagonia/ R logos) and prefer it a little more to the new. Even though it's kinda weird that the ninja mask zip is offset, it'll be just a little warmer since it doesn't use as many of the lighter fleece panels as on the new version. I have really short hair so the extra hood thickness is important to me haha

I didn't have mine and the new to compare them side by side, but didn't notice any major durability/ fit differences

I would have to go a bit lower on the price too. If this doesn't work out with the above poster, feel free to PM me some pics and we can start a discussion on price.

i'm simply playing the supply/demand game.  i know they're cheaper elsewhere, but if you really want an old one, my asking price is what it is - because economics.

You run a hard bargain. I like that in a person. Want to PM me some pics?

I still use the original R1 hoody, love the diagonal zip and crotch strap.  The only downside was the non stretch wrist/hand material.
I'll probable look elsewhere for a replacement.

The newest version (that came out this spring) is as good or better than the old design (that they did away with 5 years ago or so). The boxy design they've been making in the meanwhile is comparatively terrible.

I was so stoked they started making a more technical R1 again that I bought one right away, and am totally happy with it.

You should clarify what you mean by the old/new versions.  There are now three major versions as they just dropped a new model with some changes.  I have used the previous two versions, the off-set zipper and the straight zipper that replaced the off-set.  I have not used the brand new one that just came out.

The new one is trash compared to the old one.  The only thing I didn't like about the old one was the stupid off-set zipper (I know that's a big plus for some).  When not zipped up, you're constantly fighting with all the extra material on the side of the collar that the zipper moves away from.  It flaps around and hits you in the face.  With another layer over it and even with a pack on, it can work itself out.  If the old style had the straight zipper of the new style, I'd love it.  The only good thing on the new style is the straight zipper, aside from that, it's nothing compared to the old style.  Patagonia's quality has gone downhill dramatically.  I moved on from R1s (and Patagonia in general) and use a Melanzana now.  So much better quality and literally less than half the cost.  160 dollars for a fleece layer is fucking insane.

The R1 looks a little thicker than what I have but I love the Marmot Neothermo Hoody. I ended up buying it on sale for $60 when I had a heart attack looking at the price of an R1.

The thing that frustrates me about the slim fit R1s is the fit. I have the non-hoody pullover.

I’m a medium according to the chest measurements, but a large at the waist. This means that I can’t wear the medium, and have a way too large upper portion of the jacket. If the damn things weren’t slim fit, the medium would fit perfectly.

i think it's made that way so it tucks in better, which is possibly the most superior overlooked feature.

I think in general when asking opinions from people its fair to assume, old version is better than new version.  No matter what.

I've got both. Im thinking of them more as totally different pieces now.  The new one seems like it will tear up pretty quickly, but can't speak to that yet.  That said, I always felt a little hot in the old one and am psyched for the thinner layer.  I would choose based on how your personal temps run.

I'll paste my review from Patagonia below, as I did a comparison in my review there.  FWIW, I have a 2009 one.  I have a 2019 one. I used Patagonia's generous return policy to return a 2015 one.  If you have any specific questions, I can answer them.  I've used both the 2009 and 2019 for alpine mountaineering this winter.

Review:

As announced at the 2018 Outdoor show, Patagonia re-released the original "technical silhouette" R1 hoody this month - just picked one up at Patagonia SoHo. In short: The R1 hoody we all loved is back!

As most likely know, the original R1 hoody came out around 2008-2009. It was a dedicated technical garment for climbers, with a balaclava-like scuba hood, offset zipper, differential weight fabric (R1 and R.5), thumb loops, and a slim fit. It was, in the eyes of many of us, the perfect technical piece for winter activities.

In 2015, the original hoody was replaced with a de-contented one: no offset zipper, bigger hood that didn't cover the mouth, no differential fabric (all R1), and a less slim fit. Howls of protest ensued (including my own prior review on this page), calling for Patagonia to re-introduce the original R1 hoody.

For 2019, that's largely what Patagonia has done. The new 2019 hoody is a genuine technical piece again, perfect for high- and moderate-intensity activities in cold weather. It has a few differences from the 2009 version which I'll outline here, but in short, this is no longer a decontented R1, it's one with slight design differences to the original, but its equal in almost every measure:

Hood: 2009 has a balaclava style hood with an offset zipper in R1 fabric. 2019 has a balaclava style hood with a standard zipper in R.5 fabric. (2015 has a bigger hood, non-offset zipper in R1)
Neck: 2019 has returned to a similar four panel neck as the 2009 had for a better fit under the chin. The 2015 had a simpler construction at the neck.
Body: 2009 had R1 fabric in the body, with a differential panel of R.5 (microgrid) at the lower torso and hem for better tucking or fitting in a harness; and had R.5 at the cuffs. 2019 returns with R1 fabric in the main body, the same differential lower panel of R.5 as the original, and also adds R.5 on the side panels for better breathability under the pits. 2019 is R1 at the cuffs, unlike the 2009, but the thumb loops are improved and lay flat when not in use. Both are a big step up over the non-differential 2015 R1.
Zipper: The 2019 retains the deeper 3/4 zip of the 2015 model.
Pocket: The 2009 had an external napoleon pocket sewn on, which wasn't as sturdy for holding heavy items, but allowed you to open the pocket without opening the insulation layer to your body. The 2015 moved to an internal pocket with mesh backing and the 2019 retains this design. That's perhaps the only thing I would still credit the 2009 as having an advantage, but I understand opinions can differ on this. The 2009 also had the pocket on the right, whereas the 2015 and 2019 has it on the left breast.
Labels: The 2009 had an embroidered label, the 2015 had a silkscreen, and the 2019 has a sewn on "Fitz Roy" tag. All in all, I'm delighted with the new R1 Hoody.

Any comments on durability so far?

I have a 2014 R1 that's still going strong. No pilling on the shoulders, no rips. I bought a 2017 (I think) R1 off someone on MP and it's pilled so much under my pack straps in just ~3 months.

100% this.  The original was awesome.  The last few years' version has sucked (relatively).  The newest one is, IMO, better than the original.  It is more comfortable, and I think the stretch is similar.  I love it.
