Way better than Free Solo. Bought The Dawn Wall on prime right when it came out and I wished I saved my bucks I spent to see Free Solo in the theater.
The "back story" with Dawn Wall is much better than hearing about a kid learning in a gym who was forced to solo outside because he didn't have friends or something like that. Kid who threw a terrorist kidnapper off a cliff > kid with no friends
Maybe not fair to compare the "cinematography" though as they are on different levels. My judgement is based strictly on content.
I really enjoyed Dawn Wall. The aspects that really stood out to me were the romanticism of "the grind," the ability of climbing to pull your focus away from life's miseries, and the importance your partner can have in climbing. The part about Tommy looking over to see Kevin staring at his fingertips and muttering to himself really had me chuckling.
I always appreciate that Sender Films allows the space for light/humorous moments, even in their serious films.
