What are you guys using for knee/shin protection when aid climbing? Do you wear them over or under the pants?

I have nice pair that Arc’teryx made. I don’t know if they make than anymore.  Over the pants

Exactly. I’d buy another pair of those in a heartbeat.

I use Jobman flooring installer pants. Extra burly knee patch with foam inserts. Much better than regular knee pads with no fuss. I do flooring for work, so I use my old ones for aid and bolting routes

These appear to be really similar to the Arc’Teryx and available at half the price..
Anyone tried them?

The ones Quinn pointed out look good but be aware that If that buckle gets behind your knee, you’re really going to be hating life. On mine, I find that I have the bottom strap tight and just below my knee and that’s the one that really hold the pads in place.

Wow! Those look awesome.  Do they bind in the crotch when you make high-stepping motions? (Please say no)

Those pants are 35% cotton. I haven’t taken anything cotton up on El Cap since the late 70s.

I was really hoping this was a thread about how sport climbers using knee-bar pads are actually aid climbers. Is it too late to change it to that?

I have a friend in Birmingham who makes knee pads for caving. I've never used them on a wall, but they seem like they would fit the bill.

I think the ones with the plastic shell are better, especially if you're going to use them alot.  However, every big aid route I've done I used the inexpensive elastic kind that volleyball players use.  Definitely better options nowadays, but do keep in mind that the hard plastic ones skid around more. YMMV.

Sam, they don’t! Kind of heavy for trying send hard sport stuff, but perfect for working on ropes. There are also similar ones that are synthetic with fancier crotch stuffs going on. Look around...Europe is psyched on rad work clothes

What exactly is the point of knee pads? is it just to protect you're kneed when you lean them against the wall while high stepping on slab? I know chris mac doesnt recommend them.

I wear them for protection and comfort, you’re always jamming your knees into the rock on an aid wall.

Only done easy walls, but what you don't want is suggest is anything with any kind of lip that could snag ladders or anything else. On my first wall i had a pair with a hard outer shell with a lip. Twas a right royal pain.

I find the same with shoes. Ones like the boulder x have a deep tread that protrudes and snags. A dot style pattern seems so much better unless the approach or descent muddy

I posted a few weeks ago but thought would add to this thread. I created knee pads/knee sneakers, now for sale but the invention came up bc of my daughter, would walk and run on her knees on asphalt, cement.... Now testing with a few other wall and rock climbers as saw there was a need, so now adding in more shock absorbing foam. They have a strong rubber/silicon grip at the top, a shoe sole type fabric on the knee and flexible padding underneath and added velcro at the top so with wear, could still hold tight. We wore these over pants as well but were first created for bare skin. If anyone would like to try a pair, test them out, I can give 50% off. Just message me. Normally price is $64 for the pair. I just need the order quick as a few as others are being made right now.

Let me know. Would love to hear feedback, comments, etc. Here's the site, goliiv.com

So how did the knee pads work out for you?  Worth considering or hard pass?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
