I am just curios if anyone has had any credit card fraud related issues after ordering from Backcountry?
I have ordered from backcountry 3 times in the last 1.5 years and the most recent charge before each fraud charge has been Backcountry. I am not considered a high use credit card user with an average of about 5 charges per month.
The first time it happened(1.5 years ago) I had charges($1,700 in charges) to retail stores in NYC 2 days after my backcountry order was charged.
The first week of January of this year I ordered from backcountry and had 5 charges between Dominoes and a cleaning supply company before they finally flagged it 5 days later. ($1,300 in charges). They cancelled my card and sent me a new one.
I placed another order January 14th(used a different card since I hadn't received my other one yet). 3 days later(jan 17th) they text my phone asking about a $1.00 charge from a shipping service. I called them and they cancelled this card.
At this point it just seems like too much coincidence. Being in business and running credit cards on a daily basis it seems like there are two likely causes. Either their merchant service(bank, credit card verification, website, hacking) has someone hacking one of these services(hopefully likely) or someone that works at backcountry is collecting the data. The most secure online payment services don't even let the credit card numbers run directly through the merchant at all.
Has anyone had anything?
thanks

No issues here. Was Backcountry the only place you were using your card around that time?

No issues here either. That seems like a pretty excessive amount of fraudulent charges in that time period too, being that I've only experienced this once in since I've had a CC. Maybe something else going on?

Yes it was. My master card is my primary card. The last charge was my discover which I haven't used in six months and really just have for backup when traveling.

Never had an issue either. Maybe you have a security issue with your computer (malware or using a public network) whenever you enter your credit card info?

How are you making the purchases? All from your home computer? As noted above, quite possible you have malware on your computer(s).

As his wife, don't think it is that as I made purchases the same day and haven't had any issues.

All purchases made from our one home computer that my wife uses and she would be considered a high use user :( and she has no problems.

I buy stuff from them on a very regular basis, about every month. Never had any fraud issues at all.

One time in the Ansel Adams Wilderness a bear approached me about a timeshare in Maui. It seemed pretty sketch so I declined. It could have been fraud, I don't know.

I have never had a problem with BC.
I have setup all my credit cards and debit cards to text me for every transaction. Then you know immediately when something has gone wrong.

I had an issue where someone hacked my backcountry account and ordered a bunch of stuff and changed all my info. Backcountry flagged it and was already looking into when I contacted them. Money was returned to my credit card immediately.

The kind of fraud you're describing most often comes from gas station scanner attacks. I've been buying from Backcountry for a long time and never had an issue with them.

Hey man, this happened to me twice with purchases one year apart. You are not crazy, they are selling your card information to scammers. I even chatted with an employee about it and they “assured” me this was not their problem.
I don’t know what the next step is but I would like to pursue a class action lawsuit or legal action to get them to pay their curstomers that they ripped off.
I can provide proof this happened with email and chat logs if anyone needs.

This is my take as well. I've ordered an embarrassing amount from backcountry and haven't had any issues I've connected to them. I have had my card info swiped a couple times directly correlating to me using shady gas stations. Edit: Backcountry is based in Utah, and it would be very strange for your stolen info to be used in B&M stores in NY/NJ if it were stolen and used by backcountry employees. It would make a little more sense in my circumstance, but I ordered so much slowly over a period of time as I was replacing stolen gear that it was essentially background noise. Both fraud instances in my case were within days of me traveling through Utah and using shady stations. The first fraudulent card purchases were also in Utah.

Are you placing your orders online or over the phone with a gearhead? As with and large volume online business they use a third party credit card processor and the employee only ever see your card number when you give it to them over the phone. Even then once it has been charged they can only see the last four digits and expiry.
Supervisors and some asst supes have access to the CC processing back end. This has some more information but still doesn’t display your full card number and billing info.
So it’s not likely that it could be BC but never out of the question unless you are placing all of your orders over the phone.
It is possible that your card info was skimmed at any number of card processing stations at businesses. That said Home Depot has compromised my card FOUR times. I know this because they send out that pathetic apology email. Then I have to have a new card shipped to wherever I happen to be. Not my favorite.

Sorry to hear you’ve been having the fraud issues. Another BC user here with multiple orders over many years, and never a problem.
I use CC’s a lot, charge everything, bc it is easier to keep track of all the spending in one place. And I get rebates.
I’ve never had a fraudulent charge, but AmEx apparently has this service where they would contact you to confirm that you are placing the order, if something looks iffy. Only happened to me once. I was getting a new phone, ordering it online through Verizon website, and had to call their customer support about a problem. They sorted It out, but They ended up processing the order as two separate charges. And the transactions posted one right after another in a very short time. I immediately got a text from AmEx, asking me to confirm the amount and vendor.
I don’t think I ever did anything special to sign up for the text fraud alert... But I thought it was a nice service.
And much nicer than my MC that sent me a paper letter through snail mail once, telling me that they froze my card because of a suspicious transaction. the transaction itself was fine... but I had no clue that they froze the card, tried to use it in a store, where it got declined, and then I had to call them and find out that they froze it and sent me a letter (which hadn’t reached me yet).

This one time a marmot emailed me and said he was a Nigerian diplomat with a large inheritance that he needed help getting out of the county...
