Title of thread says it all.

Which is the best system for climbing non-vertical ice in the Alps and South America?

I have vertical ice crampons but for heavy glacier travel without vertical ice, which binding system is best?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I've heard varying things about reliability blah blah blah.  Newmatic (the basket fronts)  is more versatile since you can put them on approach shoes or other boots without welts which is nice.  Also if your boots welts are worn they can still be used.  In general I'd say they are also easier to fit to boots and have more wiggle room for making them work under not ideal conditions.

Either work though it's just personal preference.

I found that i got the best fit for Grivel G12 (Newmatic) and G14 (Crampomatic) on my Spantiks when I substituted the spring steel connector bars for the rigid ones.  I use 2 spring steel bars per crampon for general mountaineering and ice climbing with the Spantiks and G12/G14.  The Spantik has a pretty large rocker to its sole, and I've found this to be solid.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
