Help tying my shoes!

Hi guys,

My future shoes for climbing have laces, i know of two ways to tie the standard doubly slipped reef knot. Which tying method is best for climbing? Tying a half hitch with two loops? Or forming a loop and tying a slip knot around that loop? I don't have climbing shoes because where i live is prohibitively cold and flat but the shoe in the photos is there to represent my future climbing shoes.

Also from my extensive experience reading Freedom of the Hills and John Long's Climbing Anchors (3rd Edition), i can foresee needing to tie this knot one-handed. Does anyone know where I can find info on how to do this? I do not want to be free soloing this summer only to discover i cannot tie my shoelace half way up the pitch.

Also what are you're guys thought about socks with climbing shoes?

Thanks guys,

South Col

This person just made an account to make fun of the other user North Col who posts a bunch asking questions about his anchor setups.  Kind of lame making fun of a new climber who's psyched on climbing and trying to learn best practices about safety.

Dude, screw the people giving you a bunch of flack.  Everyone on here complains so often about how they see so many people out at the crags who have no idea what they're doing and have no desire to learn how to do things correctly.  You're trying to do the opposite, so props to you.  Everyone was a beginner trying to acquire knowledge at some point.

If you don't want to deal with all the jerks giving you crap on your posts, you can try and reach out directly to some of the people who have been helpful and see if they'll just give you advice one-on-one instead of dealing with a public forum.

Don't sweat Traditroll and company dude. Yes they may call people meth addicts, judge, and get responses out of people and make accounts to bully new climbers and anyone they can .I've given them satisfaction a time or two  but realize these are fucking losers that literally surf MP allll day doing this shit . For all we know they hardly get out and climb and get off getting reactions on MP.  Most wouldn't say half of the things they do to your face . Fuck em,  do your thing you are learning to get out and enjoy life . Don't mind the have been Trolls. These losers can't keep friends close in their lives and you can tell because they have nothing better to do or climb and have to cruise MP for 12+ hours a day. No sweat man fuckem.

Don't you dare! Hang in, take the hits, FEEL FREE to have fun and throw some shit back. This is mild, AND, I thought it was you who posted, in good humor, poking fun at yourself. That, made me laugh and think well of you, that you could do that.

South Col is an ass, clearly.

They are often a huge PITA, but? These people actually care about each other.

Put up with it. Talk back. And roll in the mud, once in awhile. You're an asset to MP.

Please? I would miss you. You. As you are.

Best, Helen

Lol! Thanks Frank.

South Col, this thread would be potentially hilarious, if North Col had posted it. Or, rejoindered right back.

But that didn't happen.

At that point? In my mind, it then becomes bullying. And? Done anonymously. And even more mean.

Yeah, I get angry, quickly. But, I don't know how you intended your post, so. Sigh. Apologies....depending.

You should hear me curse when I'm climbing. Gets a wee bit colorful, creative, and anatomically improbable.

Best, Helen

For the record, I thought it was kind of funny and not nasty. Satire.

Eh, don't sweat it. Consider it a rite of passage. Ignore the jerks.

Truth be told, it took me years before I learned (from a short piece in Backpacker magazine perhaps?) the trick of ignoring an eyelet to relieve a pressure point when lacing a hiking boot.

If my “Google” comment on the clove hitch thread was a part of this please don’t take it that way. Get back on the horse! There isn’t anything at all wrong with your questions. I say laugh or ignore the jokers. Keep your post coming.

Guys had a moment of weakness, thanks for your reality check on this. I appricate the kind words from you guys, Helen, Jaren, Frank, bkozak and many others. I wont be going anywhere and im going to keep posting what i am thinking even if i receive trash from a few nobodys.

Let these guys talk shit to me, I dont care. Ill ask what I want and wont stop because some people think im doing things wrong. Everywhere you go you get the seasoned guys thinking they are the shit when a newbie comes around, in every activity and industry. So i guess it is a right of passage.

I guess the above is funny, I can see how i can get over technical on things, and on things a few years ahead of me but its just my nature i want to learn everything I can about climbing because i love it.
I review every thread i start and extract all the information that is valuable, so this is a huge benifit for me to be able to have discussions with you guys and hear everyones point of view. Thats too valuable to me to just let go of because a some  people have nothing better to do than shit on the new guy.

So thanks again everyone for being part if my journey!

I learned a neat trick from runners for those of us with narrow, dainty heels: thread the last two eyelits backwards, creating a pair of loops, then feed the ends of each lace through the opposite one.  This tightens up the back quite significantly relative to the front and helps if you have severely asymmetric feet (wide toebox/narrow heels) and are trying to size up for all day/cracks.

As far as the target of this thread...I don’t like it when people specifically target other people in a thread (Helen got the worst of this abuse), but you have to admit this was pretty well done.  I hope you change your mind and stick around.  If you do, you’ll probably learn some things, the least of which being how to develop thicker skin.

Glad you aren't gonna leave. Most people who been around here for a while have been the target of this or that satire. Ultimately you just gotta learn to laugh at yourself and enjoy the satire. I remember when I first encountered the forums and ask how I could set up an anchor to climb the side the stadium stands at a local soccer field. I was so flustered at first but eventually I just started to get comfortable with the trolls and the assholes and came to enjoy the humor.

Have you tried the Two-Stage Knot ?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
