Anyone savvy about propane? Jetboil Genesis with 5 pound propane tank?

Having burned through dozens of the 1lb canisters, I'm thinking that a 5 lb refillable propane tank with a 1lb backup would be good for my uses ( limited space, 20# would seem like overkill, etc).

Jetboil makes a Genesis attachment for a 20# tank. Jetboil says "We do not currently have an attachment for the 5lb tank and can't make a recommendation on one as it has not been tested. It is important that the regulator be used."

Questions: Any reason not to try the 5lb tank anyhow? Are the threads the same on 20# vs. 5# tanks? Any reason to think they would be functionally different? Dangerous? Having never used a refillable tank, any considerations for me?

Thanks,
Mike

Threads and the regulator should be the same on a 5lb or a 20 lb tank. That's what matters. So look at the specs on the specific  5 lb tank you're thinking about. For example, this one has the same kind of valve as the "normal" 20 lb tanks.

Thanks! That Worthington one looks like it would fit the bill!

It would probably be cheaper to buy a 2 burner coleman than the jetboil attachment.  Also ups the kitchen game many levels.

I already have the Genesis. The kitchen game is pretty sweet with this one.

Whoa! For that price does it make the meals for you as well? My Coleman has never let me down, and it's extremely well used. There is an extensive discussion concerning propane on 14er's....give it a search.

Ha, yes, it also comes with a cocktail waitress to hand out martinis while the chef prepares the filets. Totally unnecessary luxury, kinda like climbing itself, but I recommend it if you have the coin and space is a concern.

+1 for the Flame King.

Just get a small refillable propane cylinder as note above and one these: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Cuisinart-Tank-Conversion-Hose-QG-012B/202538406 That will let you hook up to any propane cylinder (#5 or #10, #20, or larger). It is no different than the JetBoil branded adapter - in fact the same company probably makes it with JetBoil's branding and of course JetBoil's exclusive markup.

Also visit a local propane dealer they may have used cylinders that you can buy. The small #5 and #10 are always more expensive than the std. #20 for bbq.

My wife and I use the Flame King and a 5# tank both, depending on situation. Both work very well.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
