Climbing on broken rib?

I fell awkwardly on a boulder problem and cracked two ribs just over five weeks ago. I still have soreness when I lay down and get out of bed in the morning, but there is no sharp pain or pain when I do about everyday life. I’ve been out of the gym for 5 weeks now and it’s driving me nuts. I’ve been wanting to get back into the gym because I can really feel that I’m losing a lot of strength and my callouses. Is it too risky/early to get back at it?

Rib injuries seem to be linger forever.  Your ribs will give you immediate feedback on whether you're ready to climb again or not.

I cracked two ribs in April ('14) and wasn't able to climb normally until late August.  They heal agonizingly slowly unfortunately.

My advice is to take it slow. I was desperate to climb again after breaking ribs. But every time I tried it hurt and I think trying to climb set me back; I could feel something tearing in there (maybe an intercostal muscle?)

I'd wait until you're pretty close to pain-free.

It was close to 8 weeks for me, but then suddenly it was better. Hang in there!

I broke seven of them (and a lot of other things) last year and it was 8 weeks before I stopped noticing them when sneezing or something. 10 weeks until they felt normalish. It may depend if yours were displaced or not. Lots of sleep and good nutrition are probably your best bet right now. There’s also some evidence that NSAIDs slow bone growth, so maybe hold off on that? I would guess very controlled and engaged exercise like hangboarding might help you keep the strength up until you’re ready to climb again. Good luck on the healing!
