I’m planing on going to Banff area in mid January. Anyone skied there? Would conditions be better later in season, February/March? Any preferences from the three resorts there? Any recommendations where to stay (we’re with a kid so we’re looking for something with decent amenities). Thanks

Banff is just like Colorado.  It's the Rockies and just like CO Rockies, it's rocky, they have long snow droughts, similar terrain, big crowds, etc.

My recommendation is to skip Banff and go ski the Interior Range: Kicking Horse, Revelstoke, Fernie, etc. if you want to ski something different, and better.

Get away from the B3, drive to Revy of Kicking Horse... they are tremendously better

If i could die and ski anywhere for eternity - Kicking Horse

Later in the season is better if you want to ski any of the Big 3 (really Big 2, no one skis Norquay). Spring is the time to ski in the Rockies.

Stay away from Sunshine unless you want to do the Dive. Lake Louise has some good terrain.

Better to drive the extra distance and ski KH.

I have Ikon pass so options are limited. How about Revelstoke then? How’s the terrain there? I usually stay off groomers, trees and bowls is  where I usually hang out.

The terrain is good, snow is good, town is good.  I haven't skied the mountain since it was "developed" but what I remember is steep, old-growth trees.  Classic Selkirks/Monashees skiing, which means it's better than anything in Colorado.

What's a groomer?

If that is the case you want to go to Revey for sure.

My vote is for Revelstoke as well. Really good terrain and less people. Some of the best skiing you can get in a resort. Heard nothing but good things about Kicking Horse as well. With the big three pass I would skip Sunshine and just go to Lake Louis. It is the better one by far in my opinion. I would wait until later in the season for Lake Louis though.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
