Separate/Detachable Down Hood for Non-Hooded Jackets?

Does anyone do this? I'm a big fan of buying stuff used/second hand and I found a nice MHW sub zero jacket that unfortunately does not come with a hood... I know the SL version had a detachable hood, but does anyone see any big cons to buying a non-hooded jacket and then maybe buying a separate down hood like the one linked below? I could sew it on, or just carry the hood in the pocket of the jacket and put it on when belaying or something... haha let me know what you guys think!

Does MHW make an optional hood that can be attached (via snaps)? If so buy that.

What will you be using this jacket/hood for?  Climbing? If so, Amazon lists the hood fill weight as 35 grams of 800-Fill down.  That won't do much for you for winter climbing purposes.  You can customize a down hood by Goosefeet Gear here.

Tried looking around, but couldnt find one. And I'm not sure if it would even attach to the jacket if the jacket was not made to accommodate a hood, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, as a belay jacket over all my other layers. Is 35g not enough fill for a hood?

The "con" is convenience and also forgetting/losing the hood if it's not attached. If you were using it for snow/ice activities then snow sneaking in the collar would be a problem, but not so much with rock climbing.

If you didn't already buy this MH subzero, you should pass and find a used jacket with a hood - they're not rare.

Most hoods that are attached with snaps are pretty rugged. Getting snow in is not an issue as they seal well enough. But If the jacket was not designed for a hood then yes pass and find one with a hood rather than jury-rigging.

I used to have MH with detachable hood, and used it more often in the hood-detached mode, than with the hood attached.

The you-can-lose-it-if-not-attached  argument applies just as easily to removable hood... so IMO if you aren’t the kind of person who loses things easily, I think the amazon version would work. My bigger question on that separate hood would be whether you can wear a hat underneath it... and how annoying/tight is that opening around the face.

Also, if you wear a helmet, a lot of climbers down jackets have hoods that are designed to go I’ve the helmet. It Durant look to me like this detached hood would work with a helmet...

I second in recommending passing on this particular jacket.  For all of the above reasons, plus some, it'll be more work than warranted.  Have you tried Geartrade.com or Patagonia's used clothing site, Wornwear?  Additionally, people are always selling belay jackets on MP; keep an eye open.  It's also the Christmas season and there's a million deals to be had online.  Yes, for me, 35 grams of down for winter belaying is not enough.  It doesn't look helmet-compatible, either.

Alright, I have already passed on it, looking elsewhere for a hooded version. Have not heard of wornwear, will check it out!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
