Can anyone give some insight as to what the conditions are like up there in the peak or the SoCal “winter” months in recent years. I.E. does it still get a somewhat decent amount of snow and a little ice?

gets no ice to my knowledge....  snow is different year to year.
Over the last few years we are all lucky to squeeze a couple snow climbs up the Baldy Bowl.
Obviously you need to head up early in the morning because when the sun comes up it gets soft quick.
When the conditions are good, tools are required and it's a great climb, there are some more technical (and loose) chutes to the climber's left of the bowl itself.

Also, you will die when descending the Devil's Backbone because Baldy is the most dangerous mountain in the world.  That's a given, ask any Ranger, death toll is above 1m to date.

It’s rather a strange coincidence to be reading this in a Starbucks parking lot on Newhall Rd while passing by Newhall.

We live quite close to Baldy and my husband goes up the Bowl in the winter. Just post again later in the winter and we’ll let you know. Peaks got a dusting of snow with the rain a couple days ago.

I just moved to Monrovia not to long ago so I’m close as well, I just don’t have any experience with the type of climbing and would like to get into it on a less serious type of terrain. Obviously it has its risks and nothing is completely safe, I’d just rather learn the basics a little closer to home.

Edit: I grew up in Up State Ny so I grew up winter camping and trekking, it’s more of looking to learn the technical aspects of climbing in the alpine and basics.

2017’s historic winter had skiable snow from the summit to the sierra club ski hut feb-mar. last winter never had skiable snow all winter long. fingers crossed for another nice winter.

Well if anyone is up to drag a alpine noob around let me know. I’m in good shape and have no problem enjoying the suffering, plus I’ll have all my own gear.

I like going up there a couple times each year. Would be intersted in taking someone along.

The cold, cold rain was pouring down in Upland today and as the clouds lifted a bit, there was a bunch of new snow on the peaks you can see from my front yard - Mt Ontario and Mt Cucamonga (to the left and right of the rainbow in the photo).  Looked like the snow level came down to at least 6000 feet.  I'll try to get a picture of Baldy over the weekend.  But the forecast is for warmer and drier next week.  Snow may not last...
