I'm visiting family in Columbia and STL this weekend and bring my bf (not a strong climber) out with me. Where can we go to get away from crowds this weekend that have good moderates? I know that there is maybe (or at some point used to be??) a few lines in rock bridge state park. Also I've heard elephant Rocks has good bouldering but any rope stuff?Guide book/ area recommendations are super appreciated! Thanks MP

Few aid lines at e rocks I believe, mostly all bouldering though.  I think there is some trad stuff a little further south at the Silver Mines area.  I'm still new to the area, but that's what I've learned while I've been here.

I haven't been, but people say Andromeda is pretty great. There are several crags in the area.

St. Francois has some good 10s & 11s. Usually pretty empty. Providence has some good climbs check out simple math. Hermann has some good short routes but may be busy

Providence or Andromeda near Columbia are both great options.

Columbia MO was my hometown - started climbing there as I was learning.
-Capen Park right in Columbia has a top rope cliff. No lead bolts on the main face, but there is one route (open book) that goes on gear as a bold lead. Lots of newbs there sometimes, but is really convenient for a bit of time on rock.
-Providence area south of Columbia is the easiest access lead climbing.
-Andromeda is another area classic, but requires a couple mile hike in along the Katy Trail. Most bike it.
-Wilton just down the road a little further is supposed to have some great climbing, but I’ve  never been
- Finally, Warsaw Lake apparently has some great climbing too. But quite a drive away.
FWIW all of the areas on the bluffs of the MO river have sketchy access issues. I haven’t lived in MO in several years, so I don’t know the current state of access. Swing by the Alpine Shop in downtown Columbia to get the guidebook MO Beta, authored by none other than Jeremy Collins and maybe you’ll also meet an employee who can give you more recent info.

My first recommendation would be Providence. Solid crag. Unfortunately I'm told there are access issues at the Battress area, which is probably the best moderate cliff there. The Main Cliff is basically a 5.12 wall and the South area is very inconsistent, quality-wise, but easier lines do exist there.

Andromeda is probably better when it comes to more moderate climbing but be a bit wary. It's still a pretty hard crag and old school sandbags abound. The only climbing experience during which I truly feared for my life was on Raging Slob 5.9+.

To my understanding the St. Francis Mountains are good but I don't have beta. Wilton is hard to get to this time of year but it's doable.

Buy MO' Beta. MP will get you lost in MO.

Have a great time!

Thanks for all the auggestions! It was sweltering when we were there (my Colorado lungs couldn't handle the heat and humidity). But these are great suggestions for when we go back in a couple of weeks! MO' Beta to be ordered soon!

I second what Tyler says.  Robinson Bluff is a very nice new place between Columbia, MO and STL  https://www.mountainproject.com/area/114060981/em-robinson-bluff

In a couple of weeks, Truman lake crags will start to come in to season. Try out Trapper's Camp. Super solid crag for a mixed-abilities group or couple. Warsaw is another great option but the highs need to be <70 to have a truly great time there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
