Camping in Big Cottonwood Canyon--or nearby?

Hey, MP'ers:

My wife and I are looking into a trip out to Ten Sleep, but we've got to tackle the epic drive from Bishop.  Utah/Salt Lake/Big Cottonwood is about halfway, give or take, so I'm researching places to camp.  We'll have a 20 ft. travel trailer.  And a cute-ass 30 lb. cattle dog.  Any ideas about where we can throw down for a night coming and going?

Thanks!

Dogs are not allowed in the Cottonwood Canyons, even if kept in your car. It can be a $500 citation.

Dogs aren't allowed in Big or Little Cottonwood, unfortunately. The Uintas along Mirror Lake Highway (east of Kamas) have a lot of camping options and some great crags like Ruth Lake, Stone Garden, and (if you want more trad) Hayden Peak. About an hour from Kimball Junction in Park City. Mirror Lake Highway ends in Evanston, so that might be a fun detour from your planned route up to WY.

OP: if you opt for the Mirror Lake Highway in the Uintas - great and beautiful, btw - know that you will be bringing your trailer to 10700' on a narrow, winding mountain road. This may or may not matter to you.

Thanks for the info.  I'd read something about the dog ban--wow.  Gestapo Mormons!  I'll check into those other options.  My goal was not to have to go too far afield.  I'd just like a quick, reasonably quiet bivi then back on the road.

Oh ffs, seriously? 65% of our drinking water comes from the Wasatch, in particular the snowpack and the local canyons are our watershed. It's a water quality issue. Once again, MP slander based on ignorance.

Just drive through to Evanston, WY. You can park yer rig there for the night and move on without yer cute ass cattle or dog soiling the watershed. All other options are really just a PITA.

As for the Gestapo Mormons and our watershed. Read this: fs.usda.gov/detailfull/uwcn…. Protecting the Wasatch was one of the forward thinking things they did. The other was making streets wide enough so to u-turn an ox cart (or in the OP's case yer big ass trailer). The rest we can debate.

Looks like we'll probably stop in Salt lake City or blast through, as you suggest.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
