Go to super topo.... there is an entire, long running topic about Obscure Rock in NV.
It appears that Elko is the center of climbing.
I went through Elko a few weeks ago.... didn’t see any evidence of any scene. The big upcoming event was going to be a big regional Tractor Pulling event.
Rock everywhere in that state, the goods, look to be hidden.
I lived in Elko last summer. Lots of rock around, very little development. Very few climbers in the area. For what it's worth, the Ruby Mountains near Elko is home to some of the most beautiful scenery I've seen, but there isn't a ton of climbing.
In the Rubies: Lamoille Canyon Harrison Pass
East Humbolts: Angel Lake
There's the Pequops an hour east, that's the most developed area. Probably ~50+ limestone sport routes. 5.9 and up, mostly 5.11-5.12.
There aren't any gyms in the area, I checked out the local community college wall and the holds were nearly falling off the wall.
City of Rocks in Idaho is 3 hours away if you don't mind road tripping.
I would say if climbing is really really important to you then Elko would be a bad fit. If it's casual for you then Elko would be fine, lots of young guys around town because of the mining that are casually interested in climbing.
Really hard to find real solid partners in that area. Lots of rock of various degrees of quality. Lots of stories about "Holy Grail" areas that don't seem to really pan out....
As government work goes Elko, Winnemucca, and Battle Mountain are like the Siberia of the American West. Some cool folks, some folks just edging by. There is a reason for lots of job openings in those places with land management.
Matt shoot me a PM. Local here, the climbing scene here is obscure for sure but I'm pretty familiar with the area and can fill you in. There is a small group of us that get out there in the Rubies relatively frequently as weather allows.
Yo - gonna be in the area for a month - lmk if u y’all see any V1-V4’s around here. Gonna explore in the rubies soon - pray I don’t get caught in an avalanche lol
