I recently had a guest ask me about my preferences regarding gear for top rope climbing. Since I'm probably asked this a dozen times a year I figured I should write a detailed post with some recommendations. Here's my "optimized" top-rope kit.

I just upgraded aluminum TR anchor carabiners to steel. Hopefully, the rope will be less black.

I've heard of people doing this... I think you might need to replace the belay carabiners if you really want to cut down on aluminum

Like you I use a static rope for top roping.  However, I prefer the 9 mm thick ones.  Makes my 80' piece much smaller in the pack.  Also, I use two, 24 inch long pieces of 1" webbing (in contrasting color) permanently slid over the static rope.  They easily slide to protect the bend over the edge of the cliff.  My static never seems to show any wear.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
