Base layers w/thumb holes.

I'm looking for a good, lightweight base layer for fall days or layering in the ice season. I'm a men's M, but have long arms for my torso so finding one where the thumb holes work is a challenge.

If any lanky climbers with thumb hole-filled wardrobes are out there, please send along some recommendations!

Thumb holes are pretty useless and uncomfortable, the fabric across the palm takes 5 minutes to irritate if you’re holding anything. If your hands are cold put on gloves. They work a lot better.

Sewn in the Whites. I have the previous version of this and use it for hiking, ice climbing, ski touring, etc... A little heavier than a true baselayer due to the waffle but I wear it as a base and use the zipper to vent as needed.

my outdoor research fleece has pretty long arms. i tend to find thumb loops uncomfortably short, but never had a problem with this one.

Patagonia Capilene Thermal hoody or NW Alpine Black Spider Hoody for winter-weight grid fleece baselayers with thumb holes.  These are both lighter than R1.  I find the Patagonia thumb loop to be unobtrusive though it isn't the sturdiest; I haven't torn mine but don't think it would take much.  I think of myself as a mens medium with long arms, and both of these have worked for me.  They're best if your arms are skinny.

So many people write as if they are the single authority on a topic

I LOVE  wearing them, they are not "useless and uncomfortable" and they function perfectly fine for me, and I'm sure others YMAV.

I'm 6'6" with long arms, nothing fits well. Ben sounds like a fellow misformed human. Personally I don't like thumb holes. For me they're a gimmick, and solve a problem that doesn't exist in the first place, also, they never fit right. Good luck on the search.

I don’t find thumb loops to be “useless and uncomfortable”. They’re very helpful for closing the gap between your sleeve and your glove, which can keep snow out and keep your hands just a bit warmer.

I’m quite short (5’ 5”), but I have a positive ape index and use the OR transition hoody. Not technically a base layer, it’s a very thin yet warm fleece. There’s still a bit of slack in the sleeve when I’m using the thumb loops and the material stretches well, so it may be worth looking into

Polartec powerdry, thumb holes, tall sizing, $35 - not too bad!

Check out LLbean, you can get many of their base layers and mid layers (and lots of other stuff) in tall sizes, some have thumb holes. Medium tall seems to work for me, the sleeves are notably longer than Patagonia layers that fit. Eddie Bauer/first ascent also made some base/mid layers with tall sizing, not sure if they still do or to what extent.

For the record I got the Stretch grid II hoodie from Ragged Mountain.

Absolutely love it can't wait for the temps to drop so I can put it to use!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
