Hello all, I have picked up a job with the Montana Conservation Corps for the summer and will be based out of Helena. I have evenings free and was wondering where the best and closest areas are located for climbing after work. All information is appreciated.
Helena has a number of good crags within 45 minutes (drive/ hike) of town. I'd recommend picking up Central Montana Rock by Jake Mergenthaler and/or The Big Empty by Ron Brunckhorst for details on the routes and areas. The close areas are: - Sheep Mountain has some decent trad routes and some sport on sharp granite. Also some scattered boulders in the area, 10 miles south of town off of the interstate. - Mt. Helena city park has limestone sport climbing with about a mile approach from the downtown trail head. - Blue cloud good granite trad and sport less than an hour from town with the drive/hike. - Indian Creek, Hellgate and Avalanche gulches all have numerous limestone sport routes. Depending on traffic, these areas are all reasonable after work destinations in the summer and many of the climbs are accessed off of the road.
Good cragging near Helena at all the spots Dan mentioned. Real good wknd destinations nearby as well. Let me know if you need a partner to get outside with. Andrew
I am partial to granite cracks so I really like sheep and blue cloud. Exploration near blue cloud could be fun and yield some good adventure scrambling without a partner. Same could be said of sheep I suppose. Though too far for after work humbug spires south of butte and blodgett south of missoula will be well worth the trip and are some of the best montana has to offer. Everyone is used to having plenty of space (for good reason) and some locals are a bit protective in the bitterroot. If you find your self in Hamilton camping in lost horse is highly recommended and you will find good stones big and small in all directions.
