Patagonia Cragsmith 32L and 45L

Can anyone using these tell me if you can fit a rope in the 32L with draws, harness, shoes, and climbing accessories etc?

Or can the 45L be under packed a little, compressed, and used as a carry on?

My wife and I are looking for a good crag bag that can be used for carrying our climbing gear on a plane.

Any info or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I just last week got my wife the cragsmith 32, a rope flaked out inside a rope bag takes up a good amount of the space. If you are each getting the 32 liter bag you won’t have any trouble carrying on all your climbing gear. I feel like getting all the climbing gear for two into that pack at 32 liters is not going to work.

Thanks Barry! If you happen to pack that thing full anytime soon.. I’d love to see a picture. :)

With the rope inside the 32L, you arent going to be able to pack it for two people. Unless you strap the shoes and helmets outside. We recently got one as a secondary bag primarily to carry a camera insert for our DSLR due to the padding and back panel opening as well as the ability to carry an additional rope on top.

We normally use a cragdaddy 45L and with the rope inside it is maxed with two harnesses, chalk bags, all our quickdraws, slings, anchor cords, both our shoes each, and one helmet inside.

Mitch, that is exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you, so much. Have you ever taken the cragdaddy as a carryon for flights by chance?

I have the 32 and for sport I can fit most everything in but shoes.  For tradding I need my bigger pack for sure.

I haven't but it should fit. I have only flown with the 32L cragsmith.

Sorry just me.  70m rope, 18 draws, harness, chalk bag, helmet and shoes.  Also misc. snacks and water bottle.

You can fit all that inside the 32?

In a previous post you said everything but the shoes.
I’m also on the fence about the 32 vs the 45   It will only be for me and I’m curious what I can fit with a 70m rope, ideally wrapped in a rope tarp.

I have the crag daddy and have carried it on. It's definitely on the iffy side of getting through, but I've never had anyone hassle me about it. Depending on what's in it you can usually make it fit wherever it needs to. Definitely won't go under the seat though.

The new Cragsmith 45 fits everything I need for a day of cragging, with 2 x shoes, harness, 12 x draws, food, 1.5L water, puffy coat and a 70m rope inside it's snug and you have to pack it thoughtfully (which is easy with the zippered panel). I've used it as a carryon several times now. Excellent pack, highly recommended.

Ditto.

I have the 45L and love it. Absolutely recommend it and would easily get it over the 32L unless I had some weirdly specific use that required a smaller size. Ie.. if I really wanted something for carry on, I doubt any airline is going to let the 45L through. (*edit apparently it can be carry on. Doubly sweet!) If you're trying to put a 70m inside your pack, the 45L is a no brainer.

The 45L carries well, can carry any normal climbing rack, + shoes + lunch + a 70m rope.

Important note between the 32L and 45L; the 45L has an extra pocket cavity at the top + an interior pocket which is awesome. The 32L does NOT; only the two water bottle pockets and the one interior cavity with hydration sleeve . Huge difference, IMO.

My crag daddy 45L can fit my 70m 9.8 rope, 20 quickdraws, 10 alpine draws, harness, and a double rack (BD 0.2-4), jetboil, and lunch inside. i usually bring a bigger duffel bag as a carryon for flights (usually delta), though it wasn't with climbing gear inside

I have used my 45L on several flights now, no problem fitting it in the overhead compartment.

I stand corrected!

In that case I can't think of a single argument for the 32 over the 45!

Before it got stolen, the 45L Cragsmith I had would fit a 70m flaked, shoes, the whole trad rack, harness, at least 6 beers, cigarettes, and a lighter. You could probably swap the six beers for a helmet.

I never used a rope tarp with it, once you take out all the gear, your ropes already flaked in the bag and comes out nicely with minimal ground contact. Super rad that the back all opens up.

Highly recommend the 45L. Never owned the 32 but even if you’re just sport climbing you can fit in crag trash

I have the 45 and cannot fit shoes, draws and a rope in my bag...

But i bring about 24-36 draws to the crag and 2-3 pairs of shoes..

I had the older Cragsmith 35L. That would fit everything (60m, rack, helment, shoes and harness) snug plus some water and snacks. That bag ripped after a few trips and got Patagonia to exchange it for a new one.

I now have the newer 45L and it has plenty of room. Just like Jeff mentioned the rope can stay flaked in the bag and used as a tarp. I have taken it out on two trips now and it's great. It's stiffer so more durable than the previous version and I will say the lack of compression straps is a drag, but otherwise 9/10 great bag.

I've had the same experience with this bag. I fit a 60m flaked, shoes, a full rack, harness (misty cadillac, which is large), chalkbag, and helmet. The helmet goes in at the end through the top. It's pretty jammed with all of that, but it fits. If the rope is in my Metolious ropemaster, I can't fit my shoes.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
