How are strap on crampons for ski boots (let's say for moderate snow/icy terrain, but no vertical ice climbing)? Safe/reliable or are toe bails recommended? Thanks :)

I tried the Petzl strap on bails at the start of this year and they didn't work with my boot so I had to switch to the wire bail.
I have Grivel and Camp crampons that are strap on and they are fine. So check fit first.
I climbed with a guy who did just fine in my full auto (toe bails) Petzl M10s. They are a water ice type crampon, so probably a fair bit heavier than something like a Saberteeth. OTOIH Petzl's toe bails are known to work better with a wide range of boot types than BD's. Definitely try on if you can. (And PM me if you'd like to buy the M10s from me.)
Thanks for your input! So maybe being more specific would help me get the best answer possible... I have the BD serac crampons (strap on) and wondering if I can use it on my ski boots because it looks like it fits well but hard to stay when you're not actually climbing a steep gully or something... OR wondering if I could get a wide toe bail added on this one (they say it's compatible with the "pro" model but I wonder if I could do both the strap and front toe bail on the same crampon)... Any thoughts?

I think you can add a wire bail but it might mean cutting off the tabs that hold the strap.
There's nothing wrong with a strap style bail if it fits. You definitely don't need wire bails to climb ice.
You cannot add a wire bail to a strap on crampon. With no heal bail, the toe wire will not stay in. Properly adjusted, your seracs should work perfectly on your ski boots. Maybe a little play by nature of being a strap crampon but nothing bad. Of course, a semi auto or full auto crampon would be more secure, but none will move significantly with proper adjustment (ie adjust them in your house, not at the base of the climb) Good luck!
