Best to not blow out the few free camp spots by making a Mtn Project thread out of them. If you do enough googling you'll find the spots.

Oh heavens people might find out you can camp for free in the milks. Oh wait that information is already on the mountain project bishop page. Guess the cats out of the bag.

My apologies about the way my comment read, in conjunction with the comment I was sure to send a PM to Alice H. with some information about free camping locations.

Come on guise, we have to keep this thing low key. Don't spray about camping or new routes or new areas or development or chipping or gluing or surfing or spraying or climbing or breathing until I TELL you it's okay (which I won't) LOW KEY = KEY BRAJ

But on the other hand, I've changed the subject to accommodate you and others who are worried.

I think you can camp anywhere on Forest Service land for free, as long as it's not in an established campground. "Dispersed camping," it's called. Ask at the Inyo FS office in Bishop or call them.

Last time I was up there the camping was so blown up behind the sads. Took me a long drive around to find a place to park a Ford Fiesta (that wasn’t blocking the road) and still didn’t have room to set up a tent. Made for a pretty miserable nights sleep

Plenty of BLM land to camp for free. Just don't go pooping everywhere, public restrooms are never that far away.

Ask at the Inyo FS office in Bishop or call them. In general, yes. But many National Forests have specific "special management areas" where camping is prohibited outside of developed campgrounds.

Just camp at the pit. Its low impact, the view is great, its close to the climbing, and it costs less than a cup of coffee.
