Pain in index finger at base joint?

Original Post

So my finger started hurting about a day ago, the pain is on the top of my hand where my index finger meets my hand. It doesn’t hurt super badly when it’s just resting but if I press on the joint or push my finger towards my pinky it’s a pretty good, sort of sharp pain.

Anyone know what would cause this or had similar injuries? And if so what did you do to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know the answer but I have the same exact pain...

some light reading ... while waiting in the waiting room to see a professional health care provider ;-)

I’m gonna try some of those exercises and see how it goes, Thanks!

It’s weird that so many people on similar climbing forums have the same injury and I couldn’t find anything saying what caused it or how to treat it.

If there's a tiny hard(ish) bump at the base, it could be a cyst. I thought for weeks I had a pulley strain, turned out to be a ganglion cyst.

So what did you do? I have 1 too.I had a cortisone shot which fixed much of the problem but climbing again cause the finger to flare up.

I took a few weeks off climbing, then climbed with my finger taped for about a month and took it really easy. Two months later I'm good as gold.

That was my problem- did not take it easy on the comeback. A lesson I keep trying and failing to learn

It was difficult for me, really, until I realized that I was never going to be able to climb well with my injured finger so might as well just back WAY off and focus on other things for a bit.

Taping properly was also really useful.

I had it drained by a hand doc. Hasn't come back yet, although I can still feel the sheath of the cyst.

Take a month off climbing immediately or your finger will be screwed for the next six.

-not a doctor.

Luckily I just ruptured my distal biceps tendon so 1 month off should be easy

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
