How important is it to use the right sex'd harness? I'd like to give my wife my old harness and get a new one, however she has an extreme hourglass body type and I still want it to be safe and comfortable. She will probably only be belaying with it. Maybe the odd toprope if I'm lucky.

I think generally its best practice to have sex once out of the harness, but hey I've peed while wearing my harness so I'm sure in-harness sex is possible too.

It's safe. Might be uncomfortable, but probably not for just belaying (assuming not a hanging belay)

If it fits snugly above her hips on on her waist, she'll be both safe and comfortable. IE: for harnesses, Fit > Gender-Specific design

Now you know why we wore Swami belts BITD. Solves the actual problem you asked about and the other one too.

I wore a swami for many years. But as I get older, I get more sore and less sex

Womens harness will are built with higher "rise", as their pelvic bone tends to be higher than mens. What this means is a longer belay loop on the womens model. If the belay loop is too short it will make the harness quite uncomfortable for her, pulling the front of the waist down and leg loops way up in the groin. Not all manufacturers have the smaller belay loop on a mens harness though, so you'll have to just try it out. Also of note womens models also tend to have a larger diameter leg loop for a given waist size since women typically have a smaller waist. Men with thunder thighs rejoice.

Haha! Geez, you people accuse me of click bait titles?!?! So, I wear a Big Gun, no problem with fit, except if I lose more weight. I think she should do the same as anyone, for any harness: try it on and hang. I borrowed the Big Gun before I bought one, and used it all evening at the gym. I know at least one guy in a ladies harness. It was his mom's! Best, OLH
