My buddy and I have been climbing all over Tennessee and we've been looking at a lot of the local features of our area and are wondering why Monterey Crag isn't on Mountain Project. There are at least 6 bolted routes and the area is open to the public. There's room for expansion of routes and we'd love to have the area become more popular since it's only 45 minutes (ish) from the Obed. Is there a way to get it on here?

Are you talking about Bee Rock? There is a good 80 foot TR in addition to the bolted climbs. I always pack out a load of trash that gets thrown off of the top.

Southern secrecy. After seeing what a shitshow T-wall can be during prime season, it's easy to see why people do it. Or it might just be that there is a guidebook and the community would prefer to support the guidebook author instead of putting the info up on the internet for free.

Where can I find these guide books? Are you referring to the Dixie craggers atlas? That is the only one I know of other than the Obed guide.

Bee Rock is privately owned and closed. I have all of the route info and topos and was hoping to include it in the Volume II edition of the Dixie Cragger's Atlas. I naturally contacted the owners and they said no, in no uncertain terms. And wanted to reiterate that it is closed for climbing.

I maybe wrong but I heard recently that bee rock is now owned by the city but the parking lot access to it is still privately owned and closed to climbers. Like i said I could be completely wrong this is just what I've heard.

I'm not talking about Bee Rock. I'm talking about Monterey Crag. Southern secrecy my be a thing, but literally no one accomplishes anything by keeping it silent, it's public, just take your trash with you so we can continue to enjoy it.

Vol 2 is nearly $100 if you can manage to find one online. I'd rather give my money to the person who actually put the time into the book, rather than let some reseller get 4x the price of it.

Simple all you have to do is stop being lazy and put the routes on yourself.

Hi Max, I'm looking at doing a revamp and update, combining sections, probably into one large book.

This is based off of my experience climbing in Chattanooga and comparing different guides (DCA, Mountain Project, Chatt Trad and Chatt Steel, and some other guidebooks for T-wall, including an app that was really awesome but isn't available anymore). More photo topos and maybe consider updating some of the grades. The stuff at Sunset Rock tends to be really sandbagged when you compared grades to stuff at T-wall. Also, I can't remember how much it was covered in the DCA before, but maybe a section or two on access issues, local climbing organizations, and local ethic considerations.

I could be totally wrong about this, but from what I understand, Monterey Crag is private property. At least the top access is. There are some lots for sale there, and I think the owner gave a couple of locals permission at one time. I'm sure the reason it's not on MP, is to keep the limited access open for now.

East on 62 a few miles past Bee Rock, right hand turn and then right hand turn onto a dead end road. Outdoor Experience in Cookeville can give better directions than me, I grew up here and use landmarks, sorry.

It is private property, all the climbing locals go though, owners allow it thanks to some cool laws releasing them of liability.

I know Monterey applied for and got a grant to develop Monterey Crag and the trails around it. I heard this from an Acess Fund director of some sort while climbing Sunset Rock this Memorial Day weekend. We checked it out. There are dozens of bolted routes. Access Fund was involved somehow in cutting trails, maybe revolting. I know the grid coordinates to get you to the trailhead. I am from Putnam County, and I dont want to post them publicly.

There's dozens of bolted routes for lead. Dozens. I think there's a reason nobody has put it on "Mountain Project." It's sacred ground to Upper Cumberland climbers. If you want to climb with me, I'll take you to it. Like I said: I have, and don't need, the grid coordinates.
