This is the report for the search and rescue attempts of Alberto Zerain (Spain) and Mariano Galvan (Argentina) after going missing on Nanga Parbat almost two weeks ago. They were doing the once climbed, Mazeno Ridge. Been following Alberto's career since I first saw him in "The Summit" about the 2008 K2 tragedy and was always impressed with him. Summitted K2 from Camp3 and passed everyone on the way up and met them on the way back down before any of the trouble even started. Knowing the skills of these climbers, I think everyone was kind of hanging on for a miracle there the last week but seeing these pictures and report gives a certain finality to the whole situation. Extremely sad, two excellent climbers. Looks like it was a straight up monster slab avalanche that came off the ridge and down the Rupal face.
The pictures in the report are absolutely terrifying.
It was a very horrible tragedy. We were very impressed with Alberto Zerain's performance during the 2008 K2 Disaster that killed 11 climbers, he was the first one up and down and survived. It was with a heavy heart that we wrote "Remembering Alberto Zerain" and the initial article that covered Alberto being missing on Nanga Parbat and the rescue attempts that just couldn't make it to where the climbers were. Zerain was climbing Nanga Parbat as part of the 2x14x8000 project, which aimed to see 14 of the world’s 8,000 m. peaks climbed twice. If anyone would like to learn more, see the articles linked above that cover his expedition on Nanga Parbat and his success on K2 in 2008. He truly was one of the greats.
