Cheaper alternative to $70 ENO Sub7 Hammock?
|
The ENO Sub7 is a great hammock but $70 seems crazy for a few ounces of cheap material. Suggested cheaper alternatives that are just as light for backpacking in? |

I'm really pleased with my hammock from Dream Hammock. Custom builds, so you get exactly what you want, but the wait is quite long. |

I'm not usually a fan of Costco for anything other than toilet paper and household cleaners but if you're ok supporting a super-mega-corp they have a cheap alternative to an Eno hammock. I bought one for my sister's family for Christmas after forgetting that I gave her an Eno last Christmas. |

If you're sub-200 lbs. then the Grand Trunk Ultralight is good - http://www.cabelas.com/product/Grand-Trunk-Ultralight-Hammock/1600652.uts?productVariantId=3309590&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=03562002&rid=20&gclid=CJ_TlYjh4NMCFRB2fgodX9IAYA&gclsrc=aw.ds I have their Nano-7, but it seems to be around $70 most places. Maybe you can find it on sale somewhere. It's good for 300 lbs. |

I've collected quite a few quality hammocs from Mexico. They were all under 20 bucks and I've never thrashed one... actually my favorite is on its way out but I've been using it since 2000. I googled for a Mexican Market and found one north of Las Angeles Blvd on Tapo St. Its called mercado guadalajara. Maybe they have one, you will need more cash due to import costs, but it might make a fun outing anyway. Steve |

Are you specifically interested in that one for the light weight? It's fine for lounging, but it's pretty small, so not a good sleeper. A hammock like the sub-7 isn't that hard to make. If you know anyone with a sewing machine you can do it yourself for much cheaper. ripstopbytheroll.com and makeyourgear.com are good, reputable sources for your materials. For a replica "sub-7" get 3 yards of a 1.0/1.1oz nylon or polyester. Hem the long sides. Sew a 1" channel on the short sides. "Gather" the hammock using a zip tie through the channels. Get 4 yards for a more comfortable hammock. for the suspension make "whoopie slings" (google it) from 7/64" amsteel cordage, and make some straps to go around the tree using 1" polyester webbing (nylon will stretch). This stuff can be bought pre-made fairly cheap (vs cost of mateials) if you don't want to DIY also. Larks-head the suspension to the hammock, below the gather. Dig little on the internets and you'll discover more information than you ever wanted to now about hanging a hammock.. |

REI currently has ENO Sub7 for $49.93. |

I bought a generic Chinese ENO-type hammock last fall at TJ Maxx for $30 or so. |
