Advice for training/keeping fit while living on a sailboat?!?

I'm about to set off on a voyage across the Pacific Ocean, for 25+ days on a 46ft sailboat with my family! I'm super stoked, but I don't want to get to the other side of the Pacific and be so out of climbing shape that I can't sample some of the alleged DWS in the Marquesas!

I'm looking for advice for training in: small spaces, with limited equipment, i.e. no hangboard :'(... Any responses are appreciated! I'm willing to get creative!

And..... GO!

Get a hangboard you can take with you and hang from anything

Or just enjoy several weeks off doing something unique and awesome. Recover and know you'll be fine

If you can't find a place to mount a hangboard, your not trying hard enough.

Hang off the edge of the deck and traverse the boat.

Rock rings are pretty easy to hang up without drilling into anything.

A pinch block would be easy to make and store. Google "Steve Maisch pinch block", that should get you there. Or just screw 2 6" 2x4's together (on the wide face) and then center an eyebolt on the narrow side of the block. Clip the heaviest weight to it that you can hold for 10sec.

But maybe better to focus on what would be easy to do, body weight exercises, core work, maybe flexibility. Good chance to focus on shoulder strength and stability (a couple of gallon jugs would be decent resistance to use for a shoulder workout.

Have fun!

Are you sailing or just planning on lying in a hammock all the way?

I don't think you'll get out of shape if you're involved, sailing is a lot of work.

Have fun, be safe, if you can't do both have fun. JB

A few different weights of thera-bands or the like might not be a bad idea if space is a concern.

So there’s keeping fit in general, and keeping fit for climbing. The two aren’t exactly mutually exclusive, but you’d be kidding yourself if you think you can just do a bunch of general fitness exercises without any climbing specific training for a month, and be able to maintain your climbing fitness.

Like mentioned above, rock rings, pinch blocks, compact hangboard, do whatever you can to at least maintain your grip strength. If you can’t do that, then just lower your expectations and know you’ll climb like crap a month later.

Completely unrelated but if you haven't read Joshua Slocum's Sailing Around the World Alone it would be a fun time to do that.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
