I am thinking of going to Smith Rock in Mid April. I have not been there before. Is Mid-April a decent time to visit? How is the weather, conditions in a typical year?

Mid-April is prime time in my opinion. Could be busy, which is usual for smith, and you may or may not encounter high desert rain, but Smith has already been having days in the high 40s/low 50s this year, April should be a fantastic time to climb.

Buy the book.
I have climbed SMith in April in the snow and in 70º sun, sometimes in the same week. As with many crags, there are sun and shade choices. As there are overhanging crags great when it is wet. If you climb >12. Great time to be there, do NOT go over the Easter weekend unless you want to either wait in lines on the popular routes or climb the obscure.

Thanks for the beta! Any suggestions on a place to stay? I intend to be at the park mid-week and avoid weekends

Really, unless you want to support the local climbing shop, good people btw, buy the book
It will answer all you want, and inspire more. Do you trad? Don't miss the lower gorge. There are trips to Smith in which i never go "down", but over to the lower. Great stuff.

Lots of great AirBnB options in and around the park. Also check out the Cabins at Crooked River Ranch or the Rainbow Motel in Bend ($65 a night for a clean room).

This time of year, it depends. If the long-period atmospheric waves are moving in clear air, it'll be prime sending conditions. Freezing or a little below freezing at night, 40s to 50s and beautiful sunny south-facing climbing all over. By April, 30s overnight & probably 50s, maybe low 60s, by day.

If it's like right now... close to freezing over night, cloudy, 45*, and 50/50 it'll rain every day. Every weekend a decision whether to let cabin fever finally get the best and risk going.

/No I'm not bitter about this miserable winter
