Red Bull Climbers Suck!

OP posted this same lame rant on the Squamish climbing FB page, and half of the comments are BearBreeder trolling him. The legend lives on!

Red Bull is a stupid company. Their product is gross, as is their media. People BASE jumping off diving boards on the side of a building in Dubai? That's not even a sport. It's the big kid version of water slides. It's the ultimate "fun hog." Attractive young people doing "extreme" shit. And don't forget the David Lama Cerre Torro drama where Red Bull film crew left tons of trash all over the mountain. OP might by plugging his blog, but I agree with the rant... Red Bullshit.

At the end of the day I think alcohol is the worst thing I put in my body on a regular basis. Any day I drink a cup of coffee and eat some red candy, I might as well have had a Red Bull, not that I ever do.

There is a pretty positive correlation between caffeine and sport performance up until it hinders you.

A single redbull even 2-3 days a week is probably not a big deal. Even from a sugar aspect. Where I see the bigger problem is with teenagers, night shift workers, and construction workers who often drink 2 or more big old monsters or similar a day. That shit'll mess you up.

For me, I have had some really solid results in both climbing and cycling with caffeine, I'm more of a coffee and double caffeine tangerine power-gel sort of guy.

Red bull, coffee, monster, etc all bad if you drink it all the time. I don't think there is any real harm if you do it once in a while.

Alcohol has got to be the biggest problem I see climbers doing. It slows your healing so it is crazy when I see people on week long trips chugging beers every night.

I hate coffee but my friend talked me into drinking some before a 5.12 project onetime and you know if you only drink it once every few months it really does help give you extra energy. My friend on the other hand who drinks a few cups a day gets almost no affect from it. Basically if you drink it all the time your body stops producing it's own chemicals to balance out the affect of what you are taking in.

Never drank a red bull but have had to pull over and take a hour nap on the side of the road when I was doing a 14 hour drive home after getting sick on the last day of a climbing trip. I ended up grabbing a monster and it helped me get home safely without falling asleep.

Coffee, beer, wine, an energy drink. These are life's simple pleasures.

OK, woah, hold them horses. You are completely right, too much of anything is bad. The American sugar addiction is a serious problem, but unsure of throwing it at the feet of red bull or the sponsored athlete. Got to pay the bills

A bigger issue, and more appropriate for outage imho, are handlers aka "team mangers" and the XTREME!! culture pushing athletes beyond their comfort level. The athletes have reported taking huge risks because of being told "I have five other hungry young talented athletes waiting for my call back, now go send that shit and make sure to get footage". Now that is whoring oneself out on a different level

I get it, pick your battles. Just save the whiny BS and go to the right audience if you actually want to make a change.

So, to chime in since people are looping a lot of things together:

There is literally nothing wrong with coffee. Everybody assumes there must be, lump it in with other vices, but...this simply isn't supported by the evidence. What studies have been conducted have shown mostly positive effects similar to (and actually superior to) tea. It has more antioxidants than green tea and is associated with lower risks of cancer, Alzheimer's, and Type II Diabetes, and caffeine has been shown to improve memory, attention, and, of course, alertness. Granted, caffeine is mildly addictive and excessive amounts can have adverse effects, but these are mostly benign and really don't outweigh the benefits. As long as you're not pouring tons of cream or sugar into it (black is ideal), coffee is good for you.

Obviously as a raw vegan his real beef is with the taurine.

OP,

How about you remove the link to your blog. If you want MP to advertise your blog pay for it instead of trolling to get more site visits.

Assuming there are studies that support your claims (I wouldn't put money on it) I can tell based on your post that you don't have access to journals with said studies and definitely haven't read them.

Curious who was saying this. Both Honnald (i think the npr interview, or maybe it was the enormocast one) and Will Gadd on his blog have painted a very different picture of sponsorship. Basically they both said that other than media events (speaking, slideshows, etc) it was up to the athlete to come up with ideas for trips. Not saying athletes don't feel pressure to keep outperforming themselves and others or get more likes on social media, but I doubt that is being specifically directed by the sponsors.

Rock climbers who accept sponsorships from disreputable companies like Red Bull embarass themselves and the sport they represent. Red Bull is one of the most notable sponsors of adventure sports and also the most abominable. Numerous studies have shown the harmful effects of Red Bull on the human body, yet pro climbers like Alex Megos, Will Gadd and David Lama continue to promote it. Anyone who claims this stuff is healthy is more full of shit than a campground outhouse. I understand these are popular, charismatic people who could charm the fangs off a snake, but that shouldn’t win them a free pass for ethics. I doubt Will Gadd chugs a Red Bull before clambering up WI6 ice! To watch Megos, Lama, Gadd and others fawning at the feet of Mammon just to score a few extra bucks for their next climbing trip makes me sick to my stomach. The amount of harm done to young people who admire these hero climbers and begin ingesting toxic substances is incalculable. They may as well accept sponsorships from Phillip Morris — and in fact they probably would! Maybe they could even borrow a slogan from the Marlboro Man; ‘Red Bull tastes good like chemicals should.’ Promoting cigarette smoking may even be more ethical than promoting Red Bull because the harmful effects of nicotine are widely known, whereas the side effects of taurine and other Red Bull ingredients have been less publicized. With climbing making its debut in the Olympics soon, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Megos, Gadd and company pimping McDonalds or Pepsi Cola. They should be ashamed of themselves. Red bull supports cool athletes and invests money into sports I am interested in, like climbing, biking, and skiing. Caffeine is a legal and safe performance enhancing drug. Don't see a big issue.

Also it's not so much a cash grab "to score a few extra bucks for their next climbing trip" since they are full time professional athletes. It's a business decision, sponsorships are their full time income, it puts food on the table and pays their rent, etc.

Someone is butthurt they can't get sponsored.

The way you talk about these athletes shows you know nothing about a life of a professional athlete and what goes into it.

This reminds me of a story...

So once upon time, I was a supervisor in an outdoor ed setting... We have a few days off and most of the staff goes off-site to enjoy some RnR. At least one stays behind... I only for sure remember one, because of the story.

So myself and one of the other managers come back up the mountain a few hours before the rest of the staff reports so we can prep things and have some goodies ready for them. We walk park the car and walk into the main dining hall area. What do we behold? The one employee who stayed over has stacked two of the tables on top of each other, and is in a kayak on the top table. He's wearing an inside out shirt, two life jackets, a climbing helmet with feathers stuck in the vents, is paddling furiously and singing "I'M ON A BOAT" at the top of his lungs. As he (with no hint of embarrassment)gets out of his kayak to great us we discover he is also wearing athletic shorts about three sizes to small. Very exxxxtreeeme.

It was quite the sight.
