Athens, GA climbing gym

I am considering a job opportunity in Athens but proximity to climbing is (obviously) a necessity. I am currently in Charlotte and a weekend trip to Rumbling Bald would be about the same distance, Cashiers/Highlands would actually be closer, Linville Gorge about would be an additional hour. I can live with all of that. I also love the idea of being closer to Chattanooga.

However, proximity to a decent gym is also very important...to the point that it could be a deal-breaker. I don't want to drive all the way to Stone Summit 2-3 nights a week. Can anyone give me info on Active Climbing Gym in Athens? From their website it looks to be a very birthday party-oriented and bouldering gym. How is the climbing community in Athens and at this gym?

Active is a small bouldering only gym. It's perfectly fine if you're into bouldering or wanting to get strong. They reset the routes fairly regularly and do a decent job of it. The birthday room is totally separate so you're generally not subjected to the kiddies. If you're wanting to climb roped routes indoors you would still need to drive 1 hr to Stone Summit.

There is more outdoor climbing around here that you would think. You can get to Yonah, Currahee or Tallulah in about an hour. Within 2 hours you can get to Highlands/Cashiers. Within 3 hours you can get to your usual climbing in WNC or even Chatty.

Come on down the waters fine. Look me up when you get here to go climbing.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
