Anyone know what the free camping mentioned in the stony clove area description entails at Notch Lake? It's mentioned in the area description but have found no other mentions anywhere and one place stated that camping was prohibited. Any one have any info about it?

I'm pretty sure you can camp on state land anywhere that's 150 ft from water, trails, and roads. (And below a certain elevation, 3000 ft I think)

Thanks! Any word on how the ice is doing up there?

I was up there yesterday.
The campsite is marked as no camping in the off season.
The WI2 stuff had touched down but the longer pillars were still forming. Didn't go by black dike. Across the way on the East side I saw some longer pillars that touched down. We had a good day, got in some leads and a bit of mixed stuff on the West side.

In short you can climb ice but it's thin.

Thank you very much for the info, we'll just wander 150 feet into the woods then.

The old RR bed runs parallel to, and just east of, the road. That will provide a flat spot for the tent(s).

Happy New Year ! There is long strong history of New Years climbing trips
The Gunks and Catskills used to be bonfires, beers n Bash Ups.
This was back when you sacrificed the finger nails on your pinkies, from straight shaft tools, most of us had horizontally oriented front points.with strap on crampons.
I'm jealous ! Raise a beer to the lost memories, Cheers!

Some Donald Perry territory?!
Depending on snow-pack, Some places at the Top Of The "Bank" get verglassed fixe'd ropes and exits. Sometimes this ice sheds in the morning, bring goggles.

Then
Rail-Trails for winter adventures!? Joplenberg Mnt!? I have not crossed th tressel since it opened across the road. The remnants of Rail Road lines ! In heavy snow years
the drools that line some of the road-cuts!
Here's a thought,
Where are the largest 5th class 'zones' ? Some of the best are now a long walk to some great ledges. along with some places on the Grand Traverse Ledge,
This is in the running.

can anyone give an update on this question? - I'm still confused... The Devil's Tombstone Campground is closed till May, so it would be obviously illegal to camp at it. My understanding of the phrase "There is free camping at Notch Lake (near the parking area)" was that one can camp right near the parking lot - but now I'm not sure about that anymore. I was told that even leaving the car at the parking overnight would cause ranger's visit and subsequent troubles... Would be very grateful for any advice!
