Washing Hardshell

How do you wash your hardshell gear? It seems like every time I break down and finally wash a hardshell jacket/pant it soon thereafter starts to delaminate. I'm to the point now where I don't even wash my hardshells just for this reason. Wondering if there's a better way?

I wipe my hard-shells down with a wet rag.

I've never washed mine. If you do, and even if you don't, over time the water repellent treatment wears off and has to be reapplied. But it does get nasty around the collar. I try to just spot wash those areas with a soapy wash cloth in the sink.

I have mostly 2 layer macpac eVent jacket that's been going well for ~6 years (pin holes get sealed up with seam sealer). It goes in the front loader with a small amount of tech wash or similar. The instructions on it say "wash frequently". Pair of less old eVent pants are doing well too. Haven't gotten around to buying any goretex because this jacket just keeps on going :)

Seems like a pretty shitty material if a single wash significantly shortens its lifespan. All a washing machine is, is a drum full of water and a bit of soap. If it can't handle that how is it going to handle the abuse of pack straps rubbing in the rain on a 50km walk.

Wash them, otherwise you're clogging the pores of the jacket with dirt/oils and reducing the breathability you paid so much for.

If they're delaming, it means you either are waiting too long to wash them, or they're crap to begin with. Note that most manufacturers will cover delams.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
