beware WebTogs and internetfusion.co.uk

I recently ordered an item from WebTogs ( webtogs.com/en-UK/) through their online store, paying with a credit card. The next day, I got this email:

Many thanks for making contact.

For security purposes, please could you email a scanned copy of your passport or driving license.

This is part of our anti-fraud policy and is carried out in order to minimise fraudulent use of our customers credit or debit cards.

We look forward to hearing from you further

I emailed webtogs copying the original email and refusing to provide the requested ID photo and they responded within the hour, confirming that they had sent the email and offering to cancel my order, which I asked them to do. A little research online turned up generally favorable reviews of the company, and only one other report of what I experienced. Just thought I'd let the folks here know to beware.

I've been asked to provide my phone number for some orders. They use it to send a text with a number which I then have to enter into the website to complete the order. This is typically only with purchasing digital items online which I suspect might be a high-abuse market. It could be legit, some companies do receive a lot of stolen credit card orders, but either way I would have canceled my order as well since it's plenty easy to find a retailer that doesnt need that info.

Thanks for sharing this. I too, found the website suspicious along with a very similar website called "fitness footwear". I won't be ordering from them!

I have just experienced this as well.  I ordered a suitcase and a toiletry bag.  Why I have to send them a scan of my passport is beyond me.  I order online all the time.  Yes very suspicious.

My bank looks after fraud, there's no need for a company that I order from to need to do this.
