Mini Trax and Ascension Ascender for TR Solo

Hey all,

I know there have been numerous TR solo setup threads in the past but I am looking for opinions/experience on a specific setup.

I really am hoping to not have to buy two new pieces, just the mini traxion. I already own the ascension ascender.

I am wondering if any of you have experience using these two together to TR solo. If so is it fine to work with?

Did you find a special way to rig the two to your harness that worked best?

My plan would be to have two ropes fixed at the anchor. The traxion on the "climbing" line and the ascender on the other strand.

Thanks.

That sounds fine.

I use a shoulder sling to hold the ascender up above my belay loop, and let the micro trax hang down. have a chest ascender but it should work about the same as yours.

I use the ascension ascender below a microcender. I like having a camming device as my primary. Makes me feel like I'm avoiding rope damage. I've never had the ascension take any weight, the microcender has always engaged immediately.

Might be worth considering vs the mini traxion.

if you're buying an additional piece of gear for TR solo I'd get either the mini/micro traxion or the microcender. The microcender has the advantage of being toothless while the mini/micro trax has more versatility as a progress capture pulley. Regardless of which one you get, use it above the ascension and use either a chest harness or a loop of bungee cord around your neck to help it feed.

I've only ever TR soloed on routes less than half of my rope length... I fix the rope and make sure that each half of the rope is it's own independent system. Then I use a mini tax on the climb line and make sure this line is weighted somehow at the bottom (usually just bundle up the rope and tie it off a few feet off the deck). Then on the non-climb side I tie alpine butterflies every 5 ft or so to clip as a back-up. Has worked just fine.

I use a microcender and an ascention. But I think an important detail that affects the setup is if you're using single or double ropes. If I can use a double rope I do, and I set up my microcender as the trailing backup on a short sling, like Petzl's direction here: petzl.com/US/en/Sport/Appen…

Petzl's reasoning for trailing the microcender instead of a microtrax or ascention is that the microcender has been tested to catch a bigger fall without damaging rope. There is more information about this in the link above.

That said, if I"m using a single rope, I put the microcender above the ascention.

Whichever ascender I use as my primary, I keep it held up with a short loop of thin stretchy shock cord. I run the cord over my shoulders (like suspenders) and clip it to the haul loop on the back of my harnes. I don't like it around my neck like I've seen some people do.
