Ten Sleep information

Hi,

I would like to ask a few things about Ten Sleep:

1) How to get there from NYC? I can fly to some city and rent a car or take a bus/train.

2) Where to camp near Ten Sleep? Do I need to reserve in advance?

Thanks!

Marta

Hi Marta,
Ten Sleep is pretty far from any airport. You can fly into Jackson, WY which is 4.5 hours away. You could also fly into Cheyenne, Bozeman, or Denver....all of those are at least 5 hours drive from the canyon.

For camping it is free, no reservations required. There are spots all along the sides of the canyon on the dirt roads.

When my wife had less time than I, she flew into Casper. The drive to TS was not terrible, & it looked like they had plenty of car rentals. It also had the cheapest flights.

Definitely Casper. 2.5 hr drive. Ok airport, and rental cars available.

Thanks a lot for the info! I will fly to Casper! I am planning on hitchhiking to ten sleep. Do u think it is a good idea? Are there any rivers in the canyon to take a shower and get some water?

There is a stream there, and free water at the pay campsite at the bottom of the canyon.
Please only fill water there, and otherwise be respectful of the site, since they're being awesome allowing the dirtbag climbers to fill up for free there.

You can also get showers at the brewery on the other side of town for $2 or $3

Thanks for all info! Of course I will respect the campground! Another question: where can I buy a guide book for ten sleep?

Strongly recommend you get a rental car. The camping areas and climbing areas can be miles apart, and both are 10+ miles from town. Getting back and forth to climb, let alone getting water and supplies will be tough.

Are you going by yourself? With no car you will have more of a challenge finding partners since you will be very dependent on anyone you link up with.

Some areas (like the gunks for example, or squamish) are pretty concentrated and easy to get around with no vehicle. 10 sleep is not like that.

There is a $25 guidebook that may be available at the brewery. The full version is available for 65 online I believe, it's the same book with color photos and a nice binding.

Have a great trip!

Don't hitchhike. That's just asking for trouble.

As said definitely don't hitch hike. Your about as close to nowhere as one can be in central Wyoming. If your set on not renting a car link up with others driving from Denver or elsewhere. Flying into Denver will help set this up and you could take public transport to boulder where your prospective partners probably are. Once there I don't imagine it too hard to bounce between parties if your down to take a risk. You'd have to network online and at the local establishments. Tensleep is a huge area with very dispersed camping so good luck.

Also it's likely the cheapest flights will be to Denver as you can fly direct.

Guidebook for Ten Sleep: bighornclimbers.org/guidebook/ or copies may be available at the brewery.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
