Worn GriGri

How can one tell when it is time to retire a GriGri? I couldn't find any info on the Petzl website.

Mine is the first generation and and there is visible wear. Not the side of the cam that pinches the rope. The other side by the handle

Here is my GriGri. Will my partner die? :-)

The second one is from the web but it shows the difference between and older modified grigri and a newer one

Have you noticed any difference in how it stops falls? Is it slipping more than it used to? Any functional difference?

I don't see any wear. What should I be looking at?

Those look brand new compared to mine. You're more than fine.

The petzl I'D has wear indicators to show when the cam is too worn to function properly, but I don't know if the gri gri's have this feature, since they're recreational equipment. You should definitely contact them but I think they'll tell you to retire it regardless of how the wear will impact your belay experience.

I used to climb with this guy that had a pretty worn out grigri and I noticed it resulted in lead falls being caught much later by the time the cam finally activated, resulting in bigger falls. It would also 'creep', giving a small amount of slack out when the cam was locked and the climber was weighing the rope.

How has it been working for you in the field?

What wear? It looks barely used.

Holy shit, how the fuck do wear the stainless steel cam? Also, unless it's sharp you're fine.

I think the real saftey issues can be resolved by updating your MacBook instead.

You are fine until you wear a hole through the plate. After that you're still fine but it'll fuzz up the rope if you aren't careful.

I had always wondered what a worn out GriGri looked like.   Folks had always just said they wear down and "you'll know."   Without holding a new one side-by-side you lose a little perspective on just how much wear you have.

In case it helps (or entertains) anyone, here is a photo of what a well-loved GriGri from ~ 1991 looks like when it truly is over-loved.

Reviving old thread here. Does anyone have similar wear to this on their GriGri? I’m guessing this is from putting the brake strand over the side when rappelling and lowering. Does anyone put the rope over the front of their GriGri in the braking position like a normal atc?

I consider this normal wear and tear, I’m just not sure if I could extend the life of my GriGri by holding the rope over the front of the device instead of over the side.

You're using the device as intended, you loose allot of control if you do it straight over the front, the wear is normal so don't try for abnormal wear.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
