Dispersed camping near Vail/Minturn/Avon

Any info on dispersed camping in the Vail area would be greatly appreciated. Most likely will be in a Honda Pilot, so decent clearance, but loaded down with people and gear. Looking to put down just a couple tents for the night, the evening before the Mountain Games 10k. I was thinking Red Sandstone Road, but I really can't remember if camping is permitted along that road. Up along Shrine Pass Road was another idea...but I don't think it'll be melted out yet. I know there are a couple campgrounds south of Minturn...but I doubt we'll be there early enough to get a site, same with Gore Creek.

Thanks for any help/info that is out there!

I would head south from minturn on hway 24. drive a few miles to homestake wilderness. there's also good climbing down there (the aircraft carrier is a super cool feature). It is a solid 20+ min from I-70, but its free.

you can also drive up red sandstone road north side of i-70 in Vail (unfortunately to the top near piney lake... its a few miles, also a good 20+ min) and you can dispersed camp just before you reach the piney lake paid area, or the cabins... the people who own the property up there recently made some changes... and the dispersed camping spots are fewer in number, I would almost count on these being occupied.

In the summer, you can also dispersed cam up shrine pass. Your right, the access here might be an issue with snow, and it doesn't open until June 21.

The stuff just south of minturn will most certainly not be open yet (im assuming you mean at the entrance to Holy cross wilderness on Tigiwon Road. Tigiwon is also closed until 6/21...). you can camp right there by the river before the wilderness area.... but that will probably be crowded.

There is also camping (and climbing) at Wolcott, about 30 min from Vail ( blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/crvfo/r…).

Pete, head up Red Sandstone towards piney lake. You'll find some spots.

Cool...thanks to everyone for the info and input. I appreciate it.

JuJu....I used to live in Eagle and got to do some of the climbs at Wolcott...fun stuff. But never looked at the area for camping.

Cameron and GoingUp...Red Sandstone was my hope. If we get going early enough...that may be what we shoot for.

Thanks!
