Hey Gang, It's been a while since I've been hosed by the weather in the Red Rocks. But alas, here I am, looking to pull plastic in between fits of drinking and gambling my sorrows away ;-) What is the best gym in Vegas? Thanks!

Probably Stone Wall if you climb 5.10, Sweet Pain if you climb 11, and Sonic Youth if you climb 11+/12- :p

Hope you're well up North!! You are missed here in Sin City! To the OP, Refuge rocks for bouldering. And I know a ton of people who love Origins, but I can't speak firsthand about it.

I was unimpressed with their Top-Rope route-setting: not very creative. Perhaps their management focus is more on their Bouldering and Lead routes? I'm happy to focus on bouldering or leading, but Sharon likes Top-Roping -- so which gym should I choose when I go with her? Ken

Climbing friend Leslie, It is true the climbing walls of Reds Rocks or rrrrrcccnnnncccaaaa lack your amenities of colored tapes, fixed draw and Sweedish massage with full body oiling. I can assure you those walls are otherwise the finest gyms vegas has to offer! All is well in Utah :) excellent skiing! Say hi to the doc

Sharon + I visited Origin again yesterday, and found the Top-Rope routes much better this time. . (Last time they had just had given a course in routesetting a few days before, so perhaps many of the routes created by inexperienced setters had not yet been replaced). Now that I've recently tried the other Vegas indoor gyms, I'd say the answer to my earlier question is there is Not any better indoor Top-Rope climbing than Origin, around Las Vegas. For my style and tastes, TR at Origin is less than brilliant (whether in routesetting or in wall design or in required procedures) -- but so far seems around Las Vegas it's not too hard to outdo the competition on Top-Roping. . (So when I want excellent indoor routes, I'll try the bouldering -- or wait until I get to some other city lots of hours away). A few notes ... - rather good climbing-specific Training facility: with a Treadwall !!
- be sure to try it (first with instructions from staff). Unfortunately the otherwise-well-designed Campus board is set up (like most other gyms) to prevent "cheating", which is a key part of my progressive incremental training approach (but most users won't care). - lots of Auto-Belays
- Difficulty grades for TR seemed even more inflated than big city USA gyms I've tried (but perhaps this is normal for Vegas?). Not many routes in the 5.11+ range.
- They require using a GriGri to belay top-roping. And they do provide a GriGri if you have not brought your own. What's strange is that they (like one other gym in Vegas, but unlike most USA big city gyms I've visited) do not have a separate GriGri already set up for each separate top-rope station. So it wastes time when you switch rope and need to re-assemble it each time.
- Origin requires wearing a shirt. So if you sweat a lot, don't arrive wearing a heavy shirt with the idea that you can take if off after you warm up.
