Hi all, I'm curious to see if anyone here has had success submitting their photos to climbing magazines. All of the magazines I've looked at mentioned emailing photos in to the editors. Would low-res proof pictures attached in the email be the best method? And what type of information should be included in the email/cover letter? Does anyone watermark their proofs before emailing the pictures?
Just follow their submission guidelines, which can usually be found on their web site. It's been many years since I've submitted photos to a climbing magazine, but if I remember correctly, I sent in some low-res attachment with an e-mail, sized for screen viewing. I may have even included a link to a webpage. As to what info to include in the e-mail, just write it like you're talking to a real person. Maybe tell them why you're sending them the photos. Remember it's another person on the other end reading your e-mail, most likely someone who climbs too. Don't send some rigid form letter. Lastly, would I watermark the stuff I send them? I didn't. I think it looks tacky, and it's like saying, "hey I know you're a well-known magazine and all, but I still don't trust you to not publish my low-res 800x600 photo without giving me credit."
