Hello,

Wonder if black flies have made it to Rumney. Has anyone been there past couple days to report on black flies? I appreciate.

Thanks.

They have been biting at Rumney for about a week and a half.

This past weekend was my first Rumney trip with our little black friends... I used some generic bug spray, which seemed to help repel them a little. There were tons at our campsite, the parking lot, and lower areas like the 5.8 craig. We hardly saw any up at Jimmy and Waimea...

Most surprising to me though is that I didn't seem to get any bites... or at least I haven't noticed them yet? It's been 3-4 days, I'm not sure how long is usually takes?

As a person who was out climbing at the time you posted this - I can assure you the black flies are out with a vengeance.

They're awful. You should probably just stay away from here until August, and even then they might not be gone.

Mosquitos have recently come out with a vengeance in CT, so they will be there soon as well.....

I was just there this past weekend. They were out and about, especially in the morning and evening, but they certainly didn't detract from the climbing experience. Don't buy into the "stay away" warnings if you're willing to wear long sleeves and put up with a couple bites. Some of the breezier, more exposed crags were perfectly fine IMO.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
