I clean them a toothbrush with dishwashing soap. The toothbrush does really good job getting in the little creases. This might sound like overkill but it only takes about 5 minutes.

also, it's really gratifying to watch all the particulate, mud and dead skin float down the drain.
I recently used the top rack of my dishwasher to clean my climbing shoes (i ran it through a normal cycle and used a cascade pod like i would with the dishes) and it worked wonders. i have used the washing machine in the past as well but i can only imagine that the tumbling over time will be detrimental. than being said i think the dishwasher would work well with chacos too. just toss 'em outside to air dry afterwards and you'll be set.
