Kahtoola Microspikes versus Hillsound Traction Crampon - they look pretty much the same - any advantage for one other the other? Opinion on which to buy? I plan to use them on size 13 1/2 lightweight trail running or light approach shoes to cross snowfields.

I know this isn't exactly what you're after but I have a pair of Hillsound Trail Crampon Pro's (the Pro's are much closer to a traditional design than the regular Trail Crampons/Microspikes). They are awesome for crossing snowfields, and I've used them in combination with trail runners to do some pretty technical stuff. They are easy on/off and have a very secure attachment on my size 10 feet - I highly recommend them.

i own a pair of hillsounds from a few years ago

the ones i have are slightly heavier than the microspikes, but had a bit better spikes ... and had a velcro strap to prevent it from rotating

fun fact ... hillsound is a vancouver (WON-GOH-WAH in AZN) company owned by AZNs ... my pair is made in korea i believe

every so often theyll have sales on their spikes at their retail location (called Alpine Start) ... last year they had spikes for 10 maple syrup dollahs each

;)

I have Microspikes, and a buddy just got the Hillsounds. Here's what I noticed (spoiler - Hillsound appear to come out on top):

Hillsound have more teeth, a different chain - one with a "flatter profile" which MIGHT wear better/last longer, Velcro strap, storage bag, same price.

any more reviews?

I'm looking at getting the Hillsound Free Step 6 traction device. I already have a pair of lightweight aluminum crampons so I'm not that interested in the Hillsound Trail Crampon.

Just looking for something really light, small pack size for getting across snow patches to climbs like Mt. Sill where I'd rather not bring real crampons.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
