Probably not as it is based on the 1996 disaster. The story has already been told. Here watch it for free:

Has had horrible pre-reviews. Christian Bale was supposed to play key role but bailed to do "Exodus" (I think), partly cuz he thought the "Everest" would suck.

But the cast got a good work in prep for the movie by hiking around the Santa Monica mountains. Tough stuff.

Like all of us, we hope good mountaineering/climbing flicks are good but sadly, it's sadly (and infamously) a movie genre that hasn't quite made it.

We all know Simpson's "Touching the Void" but few I run into know about his other recent flick (which won the Best International Emmy Award) a few years ago. "The Beckoning Silence" is the re-creation of the ill-fated Toni Kurz/Andreas Hinterstoisser attempt on the North Face of the Eiger in 1936. (Kurz and Hinterstoisser hook up with two other climbers (Edi Rainer and Willy Angerer, both Austrians) while already on the mountain, thus, the team is now made up of four (for better or worse; Simpson reveals all).

They were attempting the first ascent of the Eiger, something that had not been done before, despite numerous attempts & many deaths. With the other big mountains having been climbed, the Eiger remained infamously the only one left...and the most feared.

Can be seen (for free) on You Tube (but hunt around a bit; too many others have broken them into sections, some of which you can't find. But the entire flick is there......I think it's 3 segments of 45 minutes.

Simpson narrates, climbs to or by 'other means' (no spoilers so I won't tell but don't fault Simpson for it.....the documentary could not have been made by other means) stands at key parts of the ill-fated expedition to explain in detail what the climbers did (or didn't do). The "Hinterstoisser Traverse" is a storied part of mountaineering. Simpson does an incredible job explaining, while he is on it, why this was both the key to success but also the key to failure. The scratches on the near-impossible polished rock face can be seen (and now has numerous fixed ropes on it).

The flick alternates between the climbers, in perfect period costume & technical perfection (miners, ropes, knots....all spot on), Simpson narrating while on the Eiger & another off-camera narrator. It's a great mix. For me, it's one of the best mountaineering movies (thought short) made.

Post up after you've seen it and share your thoughts.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
